The Development Specialist will join a robust fundraising and marketing department as the assistant to the Divisional Director of Philanthropy, providing light administrative support and a strong emphasis on managing a variety of special projects in collaboration with the Director of Philanthropy as they arise. The Development Specialist will support the Director of Philanthropy in managing high-level donors and the Advisory Board, with the potential to develop a small donor portfolio of their own. The Specialist will liaise with pastors and staff at the 38 Community Centers within the Greater New York region as the point-person for the department.


  • Provide administrative support to the Divisional Director of Philanthropy, including coordinating meetings, drafting correspondence, and preparing reports and presentations.
  • Manage complex special projects with the Divisional Director of Philanthropy and other members of the fundraising and marketing teams.
  • Support the Divisional Director of Philanthropy in managing their portfolio of top donors.
  • Engage with mid-level donors via phone, email, and in person, with potential to develop a small portfolio of their own.
  • Draft and edit letters, proposal templates, reports and other internal and external documents.
  • Work within the Salesforce database to maintain accurate donor records and reporting.
  • Assist with planning and execution of special events.
  • Liaise with Community Centers as point-person for the Advancement team.
  • Create and manage Excel spreadsheets and PowerPoint Presentations.
  • Provide back-up support for other Advancement staff, as needed.


  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) required.
  • 3-5 years of work experience
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency in computer programs including Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and ability to quickly learn the Salesforce database and other virtual fundraising platforms.
  • Professional demeanor on the phone, in emails, and in person with senior executives, donors, and teammates.
  • Takes initiative to complete projects and works well independently and as a member of a team.
  • Passion for the mission of The Salvation Army and the services provided to the community.
