The After-School Teacher supports the After-School Program Director by helping to create a caring and safe environment for the children and assisting in activities to improve the overall care and quality of education. S/he must be able to communicate, listen, and work well with others in a team environment, assisting the staff in implementing a quality school-age educational program and developing positive relationships with the children and their parents. The After-School Teacher observes and documents children’s interests and progress, relays that information back to parents and staff, and implements developmentally appropriate activities under the direction of the Program Director.


  • Develop, implement, and lead school-age program activities and curriculum, encouraging children’s participation.
  • Establish a safe, healthy, and comfortable environment for all students.
  • Positively interact with children during planned activities and child-directed activities.
  • Effectively support child safety procedures by helping with classroom set up, personally greeting children, monitoring sign-in/sign-out procedures, and helping children maintain behavioral boundaries.
  • Maintain frequent communications with parents through informal discussions and daily reports.
  • Encourage self-help and good hygiene through behavior modeling.
  • Help ensure smooth, daily transitions for children.
  • Maintain a clean work environment, and manage classroom cleanliness throughout the day, including supply/availability of classroom materials; order materials as needed.
  • Lead the preparation of meals as supplied by the Kids Café or other agencies, set tables, serve, and clean up after the meal.
  • Utilize classroom assessment and evaluation tools as it pertains to child development and curriculum.
  • Communicate accidents, sicknesses, and incidents to the Director in a timely manner.
  • Complete and maintain a professional development plan to ensure continuous quality improvement.
  • Ensure the safety of each child as you walk them from Texas Avenue Elementary School to The Salvation Army building.
  • Follow all program policies and state regulations.
  • Other duties within the scope of the role, as assigned by supervisor.


  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of professional education experience (classroom teaching experience is preferred).
  • High energy and the ability to work well with others.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • An understanding of child development.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Infant/Child and Adult CPR and First Aid certification or be willing to attain certificate within 90 days.
  • Must clear full criminal background check, as well as CARI check and fingerprinting.
  • Must be able to lift/carry up to 25 lbs., with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be willing to support and/or lead faith-based kids’ activities and programming.
  • Must provide health screening that includes physical and TB results within the first 90 days.
  • Must understand and support the mission of The Salvation Army.
