Location/Department: Marshall House Warming Center (Hartford, CT)

Status: Non-exempt, Temporary

Scope & Purpose of Position: Provides daily supervision, monitoring, reporting and technical support services to guests accessing no freeze programs; maintains appropriate records in addition to ongoing written and verbal communication with the supervisor in relationship to daily guest activities; facilitates an emotional and physical environment conducive to enhancing positive guest morale and stabilization.


  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the facility.
  • Assist in preparing meals/food for the No Freeze Program participants
  • Assist with routine personal hygiene as needed (i.e., provide toiletries and instruct in their proper use).
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Authorize and complete requests for hotel stays per Marshall House and Greater Harford CAN cold weather protocol.
  • Collect dirty linens in designated area to be laundered and assist with laundry when needed.
  • Complete discharge procedure each day, including but not limited to; collect & wash linens, make a discharge entry in the logbook, obtain a forwarding address if possible, etc.
  • Complete incident reports, as needed, and provide copies to the Program Coordinator, Case Manager and Incident Book.
  • Complete intakes on individuals unable to be diverted/triaged to other shelters, including, but not limited to; review rules and obtain signature, completely fill out intake packet including release of information, and familiarize guests with resources being offered including onsite Case Managers and Diversion Specialists.
  • Conduct security checks in and around the premises to ensure everyone’s safety. Log all security and fire checks on an hourly basis to maintain order in the facility.
  • Contact area shelters to transfer guests from No Freeze Program to a more stable shelter placement.
  • Document all referrals refused by the guests and complete regular, on-going entries in the logbook.
  • During shift changes, brief staff on guest issues or concerns.
  • Perform all required shift responsibilities before the completion of each shift.
  • Provide a supportive, encouraging environment and one-on-one support to guests.
  • Provide coverage for the facility by monitoring the doors and answering the phone, including, but not limited to reviewing all guest and guest’s photo identification upon entry into the building at all times, controlling the flow of traffic into and out of the building by ensuring all guests and visitors sign in and sign out in the logbook, and fielding calls for assistance and shelter triage. Documents should be scanned and sent to the SPC.
  • Provide Crisis Intervention and the necessary support and resources to guests when situations arise (i.e., police, Mobil Crisis, drug treatment programs, medical or fire emergencies, etc.).
  • Report to all scheduled shifts on time. If unable to report to work, follow call out procedures outlined by supervisor.
  • Screen prospective guests for possible admission following Greater Hartford CAN cold weather protocol.
  • Store, provide, and make available guest’s medication when necessary.
  • Utilize Harm Reduction model and Trauma Informed approach during delivery of services.


  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to establish and set appropriate limits with persons served to help them gain skills and confidence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel, service providers, and professionals.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and must work well under pressure.
  • Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Capacity to maintain a role to empower guests and to intervene appropriately to meet service goals.
  • Commitment to empowering others to solve their own problems.
  • Committed to working with the homeless population.
  • Conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations and/or persons experiencing homelessness preferred.
  • Fluency in the English language is required. Spanish speaking ability preferred.
  • Must be empathetic and caring.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle or have access to transportation. Must have a minimum availability of three shifts weekly.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of population served.
  • Willing to work weekends, evenings (including overnights), and holidays is required.
  • Must complete KeepSAfe Core training and Mandated Reporter within 30 days of being hired and KeepSAfe refresher trainings on an annual basis, if applicable. Must also complete the Sexual Harassment Prevention training within six months of being hired, if applicable.
