Overview

Position: Resident Advisor (Part Time Overnight )

Department: Eliza Shirley House, 1320 Arch Street, Philadelphia, PA 19107

Availability of Position: Immediately        

Reporting Relationship: Shift Supervisor  

Schedule: Thursday – Monday  11:30pm shift – 20 plus hours

Salary and Grade: $14.25 hour; 73 Non-Exempt

About Us: The Salvation Army’s Eliza Shirley House provides emergency housing services for homeless families (women and children) 365 days of the year. We provide temporary accommodation for families for approximately 30 to 60 days at which time they are placed into long term City of Philadelphia housing programs. During their stay at the Eliza Shirley House, our goal is to help stabilize residents, as many are in need of much more than food and housing. Our educational programs help them become more financially independent. Additionally, we reach out to them emotionally and spiritually. We also believe in play and entertainment, as this allows us to gain residents trust, break down barriers and help them center themselves so they can continue on their journey into independent living.  

Responsibilities

FUNCTION: The Resident Advisors is responsible for the welfare and safety of the residents through the enforcement of house rules pertaining to resident conduct, fire safety, room conditions, and curfew restrictions.  The R/A conducts room checks, bathroom checks, assists new residents with room assignments, completes the R/A check list nightly, completes bed checks, responds to emergencies to ensure that, if necessary, residents are evacuated safely and efficiently, responds to residents needs and requests, and is responsible for shift specific activities. The R/As are also responsible for light cleaning.

Qualifications

Description of Position: The Resident Advisor (R/A) is responsible for monitoring resident’s activities, for providing emotional support, for listening to their needs or concerns and for helping them to resolve their issues. R/A’s are responsible for assisting residents with donations, taking them to do their wash, monitoring residents’ children, and ensuring the floor they are assigned to is clean, safe and secure. They are responsible for ensuring residents keep their rooms clean, neat and tidy, for the enforcement of rules and regulations and for taking written action when residents fail to follow policies. R/A’s are required to conduct hourly room checks and bathroom checks and they are to ensure that children are treated with kindness and respect; any form of child abuse must be reported immediately. The hours listed above are subject to change.

 

Housekeeping:

R/A’s are responsible for light housekeeping. Rooms must be cleaned prior to new residents entering assigned room. Bathrooms and showers must be kept clean. Trash must be emptied nightly. R/A’s are required to report any maintenance concerns to their shift supervisor.

Requirements: High School Diploma or GED. One (1) year experience in related field of work. Must possess strong organizational ability, ability to follow up with complaints, problem solve, be flexible, must have very strong verbal and written skills. Ability to work independently and under pressure while remaining tolerant, patient and respectful of all people we serve. Must have excellent customer service skills and an ability to get along well with all people. Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks:   PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. Must have an understanding of and appreciation for the Mission of The Salvation Army.
