The functions of this position are varied and extremely responsible.  It is to be remembered that the quality of operation and management of the Corps is a reflection on The Salvation Army and the Corps Commanding Officer, therefore, a high standard must be maintained at all times.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for all menu and meal preparations, including other meals that may be served to other groups/organizations.
  • Order/purchase of food and meal preparation supplies: food items, paper products, kitchen utensils, etc. The approval of the Corps Officer should be obtained before ordering.
  • Responsible to solicit volunteers for help in meal preparation and dining room set up. Supervision of volunteers and community service workers who are assisting in the kitchen and dining room.
  • Responsible for the kitchen and dining room. Responsible to keep work area (stove, sinks, countertops, shelving, equipment, refrigerators and walk in freezers) clean and organized.  Discard out dated items; maintain Health Department standards.  Keep the Corps Officers informed of needed repairs or new equipment.
  • Maintain a pleasant atmosphere in the kitchen and dining areas.
  • Ensure that the building and the work areas are secure upon your departure- turn off all equipment and turn out all lights.
  • Responsible for performing other tasks related to the Happy Harvest Café as may be required. (Example: Food for Life Initiative – Salad Bar)
  • The above duties and responsibilities are not all inclusive and may be modified to include other job-related duties at the discretion of the supervisor.


Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Must be able to effectively manage the kitchen so that the meal is served promptly at noon.
  • Must be able to work within a budget.
  • Creativity and economy are plusses.
  • Must be able to cook.
  • Have the ability to be flexible with the menu, by using food that may be brought in from a wedding, a party, a funeral or by other means.
  • All three PA Clearances required upon employment and thereafter upon renewal date: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, Request for Criminal Record, and Fingerprint based federal criminal history.
