To develop effective Christian based programming for young people, which will build upon the community outreach efforts to date, of the Hempstead Corps.  To provide a safe and loving environment for the young people of the Hempstead community and beyond, where they can engage in both age-appropriate recreational activities and witness firsthand, the love which God has for each one of us.


  • Develop and maintain an age-appropriate Recreational Program – including but not limited to Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton etc. – which will form the basis for the spiritual, physical, and emotional empowerment of the young people who participate.
  • Development and implementation of a week round age appropriate, Christian based enrichment program for the young people of the Hempstead community.
  • Lead, teach and participate in Corps programming both during the week and on Sunday’s.
  • Reach out consistently to the local Hempstead community to encourage the participation of both young people and their extended families, in the worship life and other related activities of the Hempstead Corps.  
  • Recruit, train and supervise volunteers to assist in both the programming that is to be developed specifically for the young people, as well as the other programming of the Hempstead Corps. 
  • Maintain any required documentation and have available for inspection/review when required.
  • Where necessary, undertake the physical and drop-off of program participants using an assigned Salvation Army vehicle.
  • During certain times of year, such as the “festive season”, when the normal programming of the Hempstead Corps is to a degree put “on hold”, be willing and able to undertake other duties as required by the Corps Officer.


  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Youth or Urban Ministry preferred or three years of experience in youth related work in either an educational, recreational, or faith-based environment.
  • Experience in working with young people and the development of programs specifically orientated towards young people.
  • Ability to work on Sunday.
  • A valid NYS Driver’s license and the ability to pass any required testing for the operation of a 12-passenger van.
  • Commitment to evangelical Christian outreach.
  • Good communication and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Office.
  • Possess good interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Willingness to be a part of the ministry at The Salvation Army of Hempstead.
  • The ability to communicate in English and Spanish is desirable but not essential
