Status: Non-exempt, Part-time

Hours Per Week: 27.5

Schedule: Mon – Fri, 8:30 am - 2:30 pm (1/2-hour unpaid lunch)   


Scope & Purpose of Position: Maintain an attractive, sanitary, and safe facility for students, staff, and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events; and minimizing property damage, loss, and liability exposure. Provide minor building repairs. Pick-up, unload, and organize donations, supplies, and food purchases.


  • Empty trash cans daily throughout the building.
  • Vacuum the building as directed.
  • Dust and clean furniture weekly throughout the building.
  • Clean bathrooms daily, which includes mopping and refilling toilet paper, soap dispensers, and paper towel dispensers.
  • Clean windows as directed.
  • Pick up litter around the outside of the building on a daily basis.
  • Assure the timely completion of seasonal maintenance (snow removal, shovel steps/walks, sand & salt walkways, lawn care, trim bushes, and leaf removal).
  • Keep storage closets and shed clean and free of clutter.
  • Inform Corps Officers of supplies that need to be purchased prior to running out of items.
  • Clean kitchen daily, which includes making sure all dishes are washed and put away, wiping down counters, throwing out any old food in the refrigerator, sweeping/mopping the floor, etc.
  • Keep gym clean daily which includes wiping tables, sweeping/mopping the floor, etc.
  • Pick up donated items and other supplies/food purchases, including unloading, organizing, and assisting with area food drives.
  • Assist in setting up rooms for meetings and other events.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the van including putting seats in and out for programs, as directed.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repairs around the building, as directed.
  • Make regular inspections of the property and notify supervisor(s) of need for contracted service maintenance.
  • Obtain thorough knowledge of all emergency cut-offs (water, gas, electrical, clean out traps, fire extinguishers, and fire hydrants).
  • Assist in the coordination of volunteer & community service projects with regard to property projects.
  • Maintain positive relations with other staff members, suppliers, vendors, and professionals.
  • Adhere to guidelines for staff responsibilities as found in The Salvation Army’s Employee Manuals.


  • High school diploma/GED and two years related experience.
  • Valid Connecticut driver’s license in good standing and the ability to drive a 12-passenger van.
  • Self-motivated and have a genuine interest in the cleanliness and care of the facility.
  • Able to follow oral and written instructions while communicating closely with supervisor(s).
  • Knowledge of methods used in all manners of minor building maintenance, including basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, painting, grounds keeping, and minor appliance repair.
  • Working experience with the tools used in the maintenance and repair of building facilities.
  • Ability to observe safety standards and procedures related to the building.
  • Basic math skills are necessary.
  • Organized and have a high attention to detail.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals.
  • Able to solve practical problems in a variety of situations.
  • Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
