What is AmeriCorps?


The Salvation Army’s (TSA) AmeriCorps Program has been serving the Newark Community for 12 years with sites in the South and East wards of Newark, NJ and Orange, NJ.  TSA’s AmeriCorps Program is recruiting for our service opportunities at The Salvation Army Westside Corps.  AmeriCorps Members’ service will support The Salvation Army Westside Corps' priority outcomes areas of Academic Success, Healthy Lifestyles, Good Character, and Citizenship.


AmeriCorps is a network of local, state, and national service programs that connects over 70,000 Americans each year in intensive service to meet community needs in education, the environment, health, and disaster relief. AmeriCorps members serve directly with organizations and nonprofits to tackle our nation’s most pressing challenges.


Members do not receive an hourly wage; they receive a stipend/living allowance of $397.84 bi-weekly.  Members complete a term of 300 hours of service over the course of 12 weeks. Upon successful completion of the term, members earn an educational award worth $1,311.11.


Roles and Responsibilities:

  • AmeriCorps Members serve as Out of School Time Counselors
  • AmeriCorps Members will lead/support implementation of learning and recreational activities under the supervision of the Site Supervisor
  • AmeriCorps Members will work to develop the social-emotional health of the youth served, strengthen academic skills and develop a higher degree of academic engagement
  • AmeriCorps Members will supervise program participants-observing all health and safety protocols
  • AmeriCorps Members will receive training and professional development in preparation for their term of service

Location: The Salvation Army Westside Corps, 699 Springfield Ave, Newark 07103

Anticipated start Date: May 31, 2021

Program Dates:

  • May 31 - July 2: orientation, training, program planning
    • Remote and in-person
    • Hours will vary

  • 2021 Summer: July 6 - August 13, 2021 (8:30a - 5:50p)
    • Members will rotate weekly between shifts
    • 6 hour shifts: 8a - 2p; 12p - 6p



  • Hold one of the following citizenship or legal residency statuses: US citizen, US National, Lawful Permanent Resident (i.e., Green Card status), and persons legally residing within a state
  • Must be a minimum of 18 years old
  • High School Diploma, GED, or working towards same; proof of status required
  • Successful passage of a National Service Criminal History Check, which includes an FBI criminal background check with fingerprints, applicable state background checks, and an NSOPW check (no cost to applicant)
  • Negative TB and COVID-19 test results (within 10 days of start date)
  • Ability to stand for 5-hour shifts
