Location/Department: Providence Citadel Corps (Providence, RI)

Status: Part-time, Non-exempt

Hours Per Week: 25

Schedule:  Mon. - Fri: 8:30 AM – 1:30 PM


Scope & Purpose of Position: Assist in the COVID-19 Disaster Response of the Providence Citadel Corps, including the oversight of the food distribution operation. Participate in clients’ phone and in-person interviews and assistance as part of the long-term recovery response to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Make referrals and conduct interviews for traditional Corps emergency social services assistance whenever needed and funding is available (clothing and furniture vouchers, rent and utilities assistance, etc.).   Educate the community regarding the various social service programs of the Providence Citadel. Assist in productively developing and expanding the social service ministries programs of the Providence Citadel.


  • Coordinate with supervisors and volunteers in providing immediate food assistance and other forms of direct social services via the Divisional Disaster and Social Service protocols put in place for the COVID-19 Crisis Response.  
  • Abide by all safety measures mandated by The Salvation Army, Center Disease Control, and the State of Rhode Island in regarding the COVID-19 health pandemic. Included is the correct and constant use of a mask, gloves, and safe social distancing. Will assist with the sanitization of facilities as needed, up to three times a day. While these protocols are adhered to, this position still requires the employee to come in a more proximate position to a wide range of people seeking assistance.  
  • Maintain proper organization of the office, especially as it relates to filing, responding to telephone calls, and workspace for interviewing clients. 
  • Submit required reports accurately and timely as requested. 
  • Assist in the team coordination and implementation of all social service programs including but not limited to the food pantry, clothing and furniture vouchers, utility and rental assistance, etc. 
  • Provide all appropriate forms of direct service to clients based on availability of resources, guidelines, and need. 
  • Maintain all current and accurate records on clients served, including services provided and a plan of action. 
  • Discuss special cases with supervisors to work towards resolving client situations. 
  • Refer clients seeking spiritual guidance to the supervisor(s). 
  • Assist with the distribution of items to clients (toiletries, hygiene, cleaning supplies, etc.). 
  • Connect participants from the social services ministries’ programs to Corps ministries’ programs (i.e. Sunday Services, Youth and Adult Ministries, etc.) when appropriate and to other appropriate community resources.  
  • Establish and maintain a database of community resources in order to refer clients to other locations that may be helpful in addressing their needs. 
  • Represent The Salvation Army appropriately in all circumstances. 
  • Network with other agencies in order to refer clients effectively and follow-up to ensure clients’ needs are met. 
  • Keep abreast of community issues and services by visiting other community agencies.  
  • Meet with various organizations and businesses within the community in order to inform them of the Providence Citadel’s programs, events, and seasonal distributions which are provided based on the need of the community. 
  • Develop and expand the social service ministries programs of the Providence Citadel in conjunction with supervisors and the Divisional Social Services Director to include, but not limited to life skills, parenting skills, etc. 
  • Provide supervision of all social services program volunteers. 
  • Assist in the team coordination of various Corps’ social services programs, activities, and services (i.e. Youth Camp, Back-to-School, Thanksgiving, Christmas, etc.).  
  • Maintain respect for all clients and occupy a position of trust. Understand and keep boundaries with clients and volunteers.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding all job-related matters.


  • High school diploma required, college degree in social service or related field highly preferred.
  • Minimum of two of years of work experience in social services or related field.
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Experience developing and implementing social service programs based on community needs.
  • Bilingual in Spanish and English required
  • Proficient spoken and written English and experience in public speaking
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to organize responsibilities and function independently
  • Excellent time management skills required
  • Demonstrate an effective ability to engage with diverse populations
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Must have a high energy level and solid work ethic, as well as the ability to respond to changing conditions
  • Must work well in a team atmosphere
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Word, and Excel
