The Group Leader III will serve in a support role to the Corps Officers, under the direct supervision of the Program Directors.  They will be integrally involved in the daily operations of the School-Age Child Care program, the carrying out of its mission, and assist in the responsibility of the overall maintenance /cleanliness of the Bushwick Corps Property


  • General maintenance of the Bushwick Corps property including parking lot area, general building upkeep, bathrooms, hallways, lobbies, etc.
  • Receiving of all deliveries and ensuring that they are securely packed and secured in storage rooms.
  • Keep proper inventory of maintenance supplies.
  • After packing away delivered items in pantry and storage area, make sure that all spills are swept and mopped.
  • Perform minor repairs such as ceiling tile changing, stopping of leaks, replacing baseboards where required, etc.
  • Clean and maintain front and sides of building.
  • Involvement in the total program with willingness to help in all areas as needed, including dining room, outdoor/indoor activities, children with problems, daily assembly, etc.
  • Promote observance of the moral and ethical code affecting children and staff.
  • Responsible to complete Orientation Sessions and attend all parent meetings.
  • Attend and contribute to Program Leadership Meetings.
  • Responsible for sharing with the Program Director and/or Corps Officers, all matters of mutual concern relating to the total welfare of the GAINS Program.
  • Assists Program Director, in advancing the mission of The Salvation Army GAINS Program.
  • Assume responsibility for the health, cleanliness, good habits, welfare and happiness of all children and staff, but especially those under your direct supervision.
  • Maintain a high level of respect for the children and staff; and be a constructive member of the Leadership contributing in every possible way to the health, harmony and happiness of the Bushwick Corps family.
  • Communicate with the Program Director, as soon as possible (in private), for actions of staff members that put the health and safety of children at risk.  Report all incidents minor or major.
  • Ability to communicate and work with groups of various ages and skill levels, and to provide necessary instruction to children and/or staff.
  • Ability to identify and physically respond appropriately and quickly to emergency situations, as needed
  • Obtain a five-hour health and safety training within 3 months of hire
  • Adhere to all Health and Safety mandates 

Daily Duties 

  • Senior’s Room – Empty, wash and disinfect garbage bins, sweep & mop floor; maintain sink; wipe down tables and chairs
  • Outside of Building – Sweep, etc. and keep clear of litter and trash, glass, etc. Remove snow and ice, when necessary.
  • Garbage – remove all garbage from the building, neatly stack in assigned location in courtyard; the evening before garbage is picked up place garbage on Cornelia Street sidewalk.
  • Other – Wash and disinfect all bathrooms (bowls, basins, floors, fixtures); sweep halls, gymnasium, etc. Empty and return waste baskets; wash slop sink; replace light bulbs when necessary. Check all doors and windows. Dust around all areas. Vacuum computer room and offices daily.
  • Mop floors of hallways, Senior’s Room, etc. Move furniture as necessary. Change water frequently when mopping floors. Reset rooms as necessary.
  • Chapel: (Monday & Friday) – Vacuum Carpet, dust chairs, altar, piano, etc. (use polish as needed); Arrange books and bookshelves neatly.
  • Computer Lab: Vacuum Carpet, polish tables and keep furniture clean and in order.
  • Wash baseboards. Spot check and wipe walls; wash light domes or bulbs as needed. Wash and disinfect mop heads (hang to dry); clean utility rooms and closets; Wash Windows and blinds as needed (inside and out).
  • COVID-19 Cleaning- clean, disinfect and sanitize area in use daily 

Occasional Duties


  • Strip and wax floors, alternate rooms to fit schedule under the supervision of the Head custodian.
  • Wash Gym floor quarterly.
  • Assist in the overall facilitation of Bushwick Corps.
  • Wash and hose down courtyard garbage area as needed.
  • Assist in maintenance with volunteers throughout the year.
  • Assist in maintaining facility during rental hours 


  • High School Diploma or equivalent (Experience may substitute for Diploma, as permitted by State regulations)
  • At least 6 months Experience in Youth or Camp Programming and the ability to teach and enthuse others
  • Experience working in the maintenance/janitorial field
