The Emergency Mobile Feeding Program Cook works with a dedicated passion to ensure effective kitchen operations, while following proper food preparations and safety standards, to meet the increased need for emergency feeding services due to COVID-19.


Duties include but are not limited to: menu planning, food supply management, food handling and preparation, kitchen safety and cleanliness, and volunteer coordination.


Menu Planning

  1. Planning and cooking meals in a timely manner
  2. Contributes to weekly (includes holiday and themed; as needed) menus in collaboration with corps officer.

Food Supply Management

  1. Food supply control; must be able to lift/load 20-30 lbs.
  2. Store leftovers according to established standards.
  3. Coordinate weekly food supply inventory for canteen. Submit order to corps officer.
  4. Purchase and pick-up food and kitchen supply items needed using corps vehicle.

Food Handling and Preparation

  1. Prepare ingredients by following recipes; slicing, cutting, chopping, mincing, stirring, whipping, and mixing ingredients; adding seasonings; checking taste; and plating meals.
  2. Complete hot meal preparation by grilling, sauteéing, roasting, frying, and broiling ingredients, and assembling and refrigerating cold ingredients.
  3. Complete meal items in a timely manner to be delivered by the canteen.
  4. Store food items in Cambro’s (food storage units) and load into canteen.
  5. Ensure that canteen is stocked with proper serving items for food distribution.

Kitchen Safety and Cleanliness

  1. Maintain kitchen area, cooking equipment, and canteen clean and organized.
  2. Adhere to proper food handling, sanitation, and safety procedures; maintain temperature and maintain appropriate dating, labeling, and rotation of all food items.
  3. Ensure kitchen area and cooking equipment is clean, sanitized, and organized at the end of each day.

Volunteer Coordination

  1. May coordinate volunteers to help with food handling and preparation.
  2. Instruct volunteers in use of equipment and cleaning methods, and demonstrate efficient and effective methods of maintaining work area.
  3. Perform related duties as assigned.


  1. High school diploma or equivalent; Associate degree in hotel or institutional food preparation preferred.
  2. NJ Driver’s License with a clean driving record.
  3. Must be able to regularly lift/load 20- 30lbs.
  4. Minimum two (2) years of hospital, institutional, or restaurant cooking experience to include food preparation.
  5. Current SERVSAFE certification or has successfully completed a sanitation course within the past year.
  6. Current food handler’s card and other certification as required by federal/state/local law.
  7. Must have good verbal communication skills. (Bi-lingual English/Spanish a plus)
  8. Basic knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook) a plus.
  9. Good organization skills and timely follow up skills to ensure that any concerns are reported timely, clearly, and addressed in an appropriate time frame for overall cleanliness and safety.
  10. Must have an understanding of and an appreciation for the Mission of The Salvation Army.
