Location/Department: Greater Hartford Area Services, Marshall House Family Shelter (Hartford, CT)

Status: Non-Exempt, Part-time, Temporary

Hours Per Week: 27.5 hours/week

Schedule: Monday- Friday; 9:00am- 2:30 pm (15-minute paid break)


Scope & Purpose of Position: Will assess clients referred by 211 and local agencies who are at risk of homelessness. Will assist in preventing clients from experiencing homelessness due to a financial crisis with homeless prevention funds, disaster funds or assist through mediation and local resources when financial assistance is not adequate to serve the needs of the client.


  • Complete Needs Assessment Survey to assess needs and differentiate between disaster related needs and traditional homeless prevention needs.
  • Familiarize oneself with local community social service agencies and other appropriate resources including the Homeless Prevention and Shelter Diversion Program, its goals and objectives and all disaster relief programs.
  • Ensure early intervention by active community networking.
  • Assist clients in stabilizing their housing situation by assessing their current level of need and developing an adequate plan of action.
  • Continually promote self-determination and self-sufficiency in interactions with clients.
  • Help clients establish critical community linkage and secure resources.
  • Assist clients with one-time financial assistance for those who qualify. Work with the Homeless Services Program Coordinator to establish a monthly budget for available financial assistance.
  • Complete all documentation in a timely and accurate fashion including client files, referral tracking, and internal statistics.
  • Attend monthly staff meetings and required trainings.
  • For disaster related clients, follow Emergency Assistance Guidelines and Financial Assistance Limits as a guide to assist clients with financial needs. Complete disaster specific In-take Form, Check Request Form, Stat Spreadsheet, etc. when working with disaster related clients.

  • High School diploma required; Associate degree or higher in human services or related field preferred; one-year experience in related field required.
  • Evidence of dependability, self-security, and good judgment.
  • Ability to relate with persons of various socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds.
  • Willingness to learn and develop new skills.
  • Willing to work some evening and weekend hours are required.
  • Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
