Status: Part-time, Non-exempt, Temporary

Hours Per Week: 27.5

Schedule: Monday-Friday, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm (1/2-hour unpaid break)


Scope & Purpose of Position: Shall provide a variety of services to individuals in need, including food and personal hygiene items, clothing and furniture vouchers, rent and utility assistance, referrals to community resources, and seasonal programming. Assist clients with identifying and addressing the root causes of their situation.

  • Maintain confidentiality and exhibit loyalty to The Salvation Army and the staff of The Salvation Army in all job-related matters.
  • Participate in and support the implementation of special activities and events for the Corps programs as requested.
  • Assist in the daily maintenance of the social services office organization. Tasks may include general office management such as typing, filing, computer use, mailing preparation, and answer the telephone when receptionist is not available.
  • Perform interviews for all clients seeking material assistance from The Salvation Army.
  • Provide direct service to clients including, but not limited to; intake/assessment, referrals, advocacy and the provision of material assistance such as; food, clothing/furniture vouchers, personal hygiene items, gift cards, and Operation Fuel assistance based upon guidelines, available resources, and the policies and procedures of The Salvation Army.
  • Provide clients with information and referrals to appropriate Salvation Army programs and other community resources.
  • Maintain confidential client files including a record of services provided and case notes in the computer database, if applicable. Maintain accurate records with pertinent information including client demographics and a plan of action.
  • Produce and submit TSA statistical reports and Connecticut Food Bank/Foodshare forms in a timely manner.
  • Establish and maintain a database of community resources in order to refer clients to other locations that may be helpful in addressing their needs.
  • Discuss special cases with the Corps Officers attempting to resolve client situations.
  • Refer clients seeking spiritual guidance to the Corps Officers.
  • Attend social service agency meetings directly relating to the services The Salvation Army provides to clients.
  • Keep abreast of community issues and services by visiting other community agencies and participate in community meetings and collaborative networks to address issues that are relevant to the residents of the community, as requested.
  • Represent The Salvation Army at social service community functions as deemed appropriate by the Corps Officers.
  • Participate in in-service training, as offered by The Salvation Army. Attend seminars, workshops, and other educational opportunities that would enhance the skills relating to this position.
  • With the approval of the Corps Officer, secure food items from the Connecticut Food Bank/Foodshare which are not provided through ongoing donations, as needed.
  • Assist in the coordination of various social services programs, activities, and services including seasonal programming, such as Youth Camp, Senior Camp, Adopt a Family, Angel Tree, the Holiday Meals, etc.
  • Adhere to all the policies and procedures of The Salvation Army, the State of Connecticut, the Connecticut Food Bank, and any other entity governing distribution of materials and services.

  • Associate’s or bachelor’s degree in social services or related field preferred
  • Minimum of two of years of work experience in social services or related field
  • Valid CT Driver's License and clean driving record
  • Bilingual skills preferred
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Proficient spoken and written English
  • Ability to organize responsibilities and function independently
  • Excellent time management skills required
  • Demonstrate excellent ability to engage with diverse populations
  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing
  • Must have a high energy level and solid work ethic, as well as the ability to respond to changing conditions
  • Must work well in a team atmosphere
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and the internet
  • Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
