  • Overview

    SCOPE AND PURPOSE OF POSITION:

    The Tutor will assist the Lead Program Assistant/Corps Officer with the implementation of a quality program that enriches the students spiritually, academically, socially, emotionally, and physically.  The successful candidate will possess a strong aptitude for Science, Math, ESL and Computer literacy. 

     

    This position will not only tutor the program participants but be innovative in their approach to teaching and introducing new academic concepts and ideas to the program participants. 

     

    This position will act as a role model for students, multi-task/circulate between multiple students varying grade levels; provide general oversight demonstrating effective classroom management in the Homework Help Program and effectively and consistently deliver high-quality instruction.

    Responsibilities

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Meet students at The Salvation Army and go over their homework assignments in the applicable subject area
    • Ask students about specific topics or subject areas that are giving them trouble or that warrant further exploration
    • Review recent homework assignment and test scores, and work through problems or questions that the student did not answer correctly
    • Employ proven study aides to prepare for upcoming tests and quizzes
    • Take notes during tutoring sessions so you or the Lead Program Assistant can follow up with the student later
    • Provide feedback to students using positive reinforcement techniques to encourage, motivate, or build confidence in students
    • Participate in training and development sessions to improve tutoring practices or learn new tutoring techniques
    • Report any concerns and questions regarding the program (students, parents, equipment needs, supplies, other staff, volunteers, etc.) to the Lead Program Assistant or director.
    • Maintain accurate and organized records such as attendance records, snack records, timesheets, incident reports, and all other paperwork as instructed by the program director to ensure program compliance and quality operations.
    • Other responsibilities as the Lead Program Assistant/Corps Officers deems necessary
    • Help prepare snacks for the children and clean-up the kitchen and snack area.
    • Demonstrate behavior that is professional, ethical, and responsible.
    • Assist in the cleaning and straightening of the room and equipment before, during, and after the program. This includes washing tables, chairs, and toys, putting up chairs, and locking the building at the end of the day.

    Qualifications

    SPECIAL SKILLS, CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:


    • Must have high school diploma with some tutoring/teaching experience
    • Ability to pass a background check
    • Able to develop positive rapport with students
    • Established proficiency in subject matter
    • Good interpersonal communication skills, strong organizational and classroom management skills
    • Must have an understanding of and appreciation for the Mission of The Salvation Army
    • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
