    Location/Department: Camp CONNRI & Lodge Facility (Ashford, CT)

    Status: Exempt (housing provided and must live on-site)

    Hour Per Week: 40 (additional hours will be required between June-August and during weekends for Lodge events)


    Schedule: Schedule must ensure all work is done properly and thoroughly, which will at times require a varied schedule; including evenings, weekends, and holidays.  The ongoing needs of the Camp/Lodge Complex must be met on a priority basis and emergencies dealt with promptly as they arise. It is also understood that the months of June, July, and August are peak months for the Camp Complex programs and that vacation will not be considered during this period unless adequate help is available and request for time off is approved.


    Scope & Purpose of Position: Responsible for managing and maintaining the Camp CONNRI Complex facilities, grounds, roads, and buildings.  Emergencies may arise that will require the immediate attention of the Property Caretaker, and the Property Caretaker must be prepared to assist with these emergencies in a timely manner.


    • Maintain the Camp/Lodge property and equipment according to established maintenance procedures and guidelines, including maintaining the water system and well in accordance with State regulations.
    • Secure approval for any work requiring the services of an outside repairman, contractor, or service person.
    • Routinely perform tours of inspection of all buildings and grounds, determining if necessary repairs or safety hazards must be addressed, then prioritize and proceed in completing the necessary tasks to ensure that the property and all its facilities and systems are proper and operational at all times.
    • Develop seasonal schedules for the year-round maintenance of the property in conjunction with the Divisional Property Secretary..
    • Ensure that all equipment and systems, including the plumbing, electrical, and water systems are inspected, serviced, and used in a safe and proper manner and are properly operational at all times.
    • Maintain a mileage log reflecting the use of the Camp truck.
    • Maintain the security of the property, particularly during times of limited occupancy.
    • Ensure that all year-round facilities are ready for use at all times.
    • Work closely with supervisor and the Assistant Camp Director in addressing all facility and program needs.
    • Provide assurance that the property and facilities will be ready to receive pre-camp staff and campers in the spring.
    • Oversee and train the maintenance staff to assist in the completion of daily maintenance and repair needs.
    • Make sure that the property is properly winterized and closed for the non-camp season.
    • Provide snow removal as necessary.
    • Complete projects assigned by supervisor.
    • Be available to assist any group using the property regarding all maintenance concerns.
    • Perform general cleaning and set-up in preparation for all groups.
    • Assist all groups with routine needs, and serve as the representative for The Salvation Army in the handling of all deliveries, pick-ups, etc.

    • High school diploma or GED and two to three years related experience and/or training requried.
    • Must possess a valid motor vehicle driver’s license in good standing.
    • Must have the ability to participat in relatively strenuous physical activity such as, but not limited to, stacking chairs and moving tables, including the ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
    • Ability to drive a tractor and other property maintenance machinery is required.
    • OSHA 10 certified preferred.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating/maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Must be organized and have a high attention to detail.
    • Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers required.
    • Must be a highly-motivated self-starter.
    • Basic math skills are necessary.
    • Must observe safety standards and procedures related to maintenance.
    • Must have working experience with the tools used in maintenance and repair.
    • Small engine repair experience is necessary.
    • Knowledge of methods used in all manners of building/property maintenance, including basic knowledge of carpentry, plumbing, painting, grounds keeping, and minor appliance repair.
    • Able to solve practical problems in a variety of situations.
    • Effective use of a variety of hand and power tools required.
    • Able to follow oral and written instructions while communicating closely with supervisor(s).
    • Must agree to abide by the Camp’s Personnel Policies and Practices as outlined in the Camp Staff Manual including the requirements that smoking, drinking of alcoholic beverages, and use of illegal drugs will be grounds for immediate dismissal.
    • Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
