  • Overview

    The Assistant Director of Advancement will support the Divisional Director of Advancement in providing leadership to the Development Department’s staff, functions, and initiatives in relation to The Salvation Army of Greater New York (GNY). 

    The ADA directly supervises and provides strategic direction, under the guidance of the DDA, to all staff ensuring compliance with the parameters of their positions and providing support and consultation in the crafting and achievement of their goals and objectives.


    • Will provide leadership and supervision to the various professional staff within the Development Department, as outlined above, in harmony with the DDA’s vision, goals and direction.
    • Will provide leadership in carrying out successful development initiatives in the GNY, in partnership with the DDA.
    • Will provide direct supervision and direction to the Director of Major Gifts and indirect supervision to 2 Donor Relation Directors and provide strategic support in the area of major gifts fund raising for Greater GNY.
    • Will provide direct supervision and direction to the Director of Integrated Marketing and provide strategic support in the area of direct marketing fundraising.
    • Will provide direct supervision and direction to the Directors of Corporate and Foundation Relations, Sr. Grant Writer and Government Contract and Grant Manager and provide strategic support in the area of grants generation as the staff provides research and consultation support more broadly.
    • Will maintain a limited caseload of major donors and corporations, serving as the primary relationship manager with these agreed upon constituents, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding these relationships for The Salvation Army. In this way, the ADA serves as a “player-coach,” actively participating in major gifts fund raising even as the ADA provides guidance to other fund-raising staff.
    • Provide direction for the successful implementation of marketing and communications aspects of the annual holiday campaign, including kettles, media partnerships, toy drives, etc.
    • Will provide direction to the Administrative Assistant whose position supports both the DDA and ADA.
    • Any other duties as assigned by the DDA in support of the Army’s mission and development objectives. 


    • A. Degree with at least eight years professional experience in fundraising, with successful history of increasing responsibilities and good breadth of experience in various fund-raising disciplines, particularly those outlined in this job description.
    • Must be committed to and embrace the mission of The Salvation Army and must have a passion for the role of resource development in furthering that mission.
    • Must have strong grasp of the specific disciplines within development (i.e. major gifts, direct marketing, corporate giving, special events, foundation giving, capital campaigns, board development, etc.) and have strategic vision for resource development in these areas.
    • Must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, able to relate effectively with professionals and leaders in the community as well as with key stakeholders in The Salvation Army.
    • Must be well-organized and capable of managing professional and support staff, with minimum five years of supervisory experience.
    • Must be computer proficient, able to travel for various meetings, flexible on scheduling to accommodate outside constituents and events as well as internal needs.“Resume and Cover Letter REQUIRED.  Applications that do not include a resume and cover letter will not be reviewed. Thank you
