    Position: 21st Century Tutor in Reading and Math (on-call)

    Department: The Salvation Army of Greater Philadelphia

    Work Sites are: The Salvation Army Temple Corps, Dr. Ethel Allen Elementary, Tabernacle Corps, West Philadelphia and Citadel Corps 21st Century Programs

    Availability of Position: Immediately

    Schedule: Part-time, up to 15 hours per week, (Monday – Friday), work schedule is on-call (2 p.m.- 6 p.m.) for feeder school sites as needed for coverage to meet daily student/teacher ratios

    Reports to: Director of City Education and Compliance

    Pay Rate: 13.00 per hour


    Serve neighborhood children as a reading and/or math tutor in The Salvation Army’s 21st Century Learning Center Programs. The 21st Century on-call tutor will teach Do the Math, and After the Bell curriculums and must attend all trainings, be willing to learn their assigned curriculums, and develop and implement lessons. Provide academic tutoring to assigned students, either in a group of up to 8-10 students and/or individually aimed at developing student mastery. Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific material to improve academic capabilities in designated area. Be responsible for lesson plans, parent progress reports, maintaining and updating daily tutor sheets and weekly student records. Administer pre-assessment and on-going assessment tools and any other milestone testing deemed necessary. Meet with students, teachers, parents and staff to develop specific achievement goals and the Individual Learning Plan for each student. Provide timely feedback and positive reinforcement to students. Serve as a role model. Perform related duties as needed.



    Candidates should have a Bachelor’s degree in Education or Bachelor’s degree in progress, preferred, or minimum requirement of high school diploma with 2 to 3 years of tutoring/teaching experience. Experienced working with youth of diverse cultural and academic backgrounds. Good interpersonal communication skills, strong organizational and classroom management skills. Must be willing to travel to any work site listed. Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks:   PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. Candidate must also complete the mandated reporter child abuse training. Must have an understanding of and appreciation for the Mission of The Salvation Army.
