  • Overview

    Under the supervision of The Director of Development, the Volunteer Coordinator is responsible for the overall recruitment, tracking general management and retention of The Salvation Army - Rochester Area Service (RAS) volunteers.  The position requires the standardization and coordination of activities related to recruitment, training oversight and general management of volunteers.  The position requires a person with the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  Position requires creativity, flexibility, accuracy and excellent interpersonal skills.  This position is responsible for recruitment of volunteers for events and programs, not the management of events.  



    1. Maintain, develop and implement standardized volunteer programs in support of RAS operations.
    2. Identify volunteer and intern needs for events or programs, develop and carry out a plan for recruitment, scheduling, orientation, follow up and recognition of volunteers.
    3. Maintain volunteer records, track and record volunteer time devoted to projects and tasks, results of volunteer activity and submit all volunteer hour statistics on a monthly basis, using Volunteer Reporter.
    4. Establish and maintain appropriate ties in the community in order to provide positive organizational exposure.
    5. Maintain lists of schools, colleges, churches, businesses and service groups for volunteer mailings.
    6. Recruit volunteers for all Corps activities and Programs, as well as for special events such as; Ecology Day, VMR Luncheon, Red Kettle Campaign Bell Ringers, Golf Tournament, and Project Bundle Up. These Volunteers are to be managed by Program Managers/Corps Officers per particular project.
    7. Recruit volunteers for seasonal activities, which include Thanksgiving Meal, Toyshop and Food Distribution, Adopt-A-Family and/or other special projects as needed.
    8. Promote team spirit and specific recognition activities to ensure that all volunteers and supervising staff consider themselves an important part of the event or program.
    9. Other duties as assigned.



    Must be able to work a schedule of 15 hours per week (Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday from 10:00 a.m-3:00 p.m.)  Hours will increase up to 35 hours per week during Christmas season.

    1. Associate’s Degree with two or more years experience in volunteer management, recruitment and training, preferably in a non-profit organization.
    2. Effective leadership and team building skills required.
    3. Requires a functional working knowledge of office machines (copier, scanner, fax machine) and computers. Must be proficient working in Windows, and the MS Office Suite of applications.
    4. Experience using fundraising databases preferred.
    5. Individual must be willing to work additional hours as specific tasks and projects require.
    6. Valid New York State Driver License required.
