  • Overview

    Representing The Salvation Army’s spiritual & musical ministry in all spheres of influence within the Greater New York Division, this position will assist both the development of the music programs in the corps, and the overall divisional music ministry.


    • Oversee the musical development (piano, vocal, brass, music theory) of the corps within the division through weekly corps visits, group youth music programming, and lessons.
    • Evaluate and document the strengths and weaknesses of the music program in each corps to determine the musical aptitude of the participants, as well as the current corps music program and, as a result, develop a teaching plan to strengthen the musical skills of the participants within the corps so that those skills can benefit the corps as a whole.
    • Assist the Music and Creative Arts Department in developing a teaching schedule based on the musical needs of the various corps within the division.
    • Supply the corps within the division with music equipment, resources and materials such as instruments, music, music theory materials, and other necessary music equipment that will help both employees and local music leaders to carry out a successful music program within the corps setting.
    • Develop leaders within the corps in the division by teaching them how to conduct and rehearse music groups, organize a music program, teach individual and group music lessons, instruct participants of all ages, prepare for performances, and how to mentor those participating in their program.
    • Help to secure local volunteers in each location to enhance the musical ministry and program of the corps throughout the division.
    • Promote and plan music events in the corps, including helping local leaders plan programs, advertise these programs and implement events. If local leaders are not prepared to do so, these tasks become the responsibility of the Regional Music Leader.
    • Assist with the Music & Creative Arts Camp, Junior & Senior Conservatories, Star Search, Territorial Music Camp and divisional events, as assigned.
    • Coordinate and instruct the Greater New York Division Keyed In program, teaching private piano lessons to divisional young people to efficiently develop more pianists for the corps in the division, as well as resourcing all students to teach piano lessons and classes in their corps.
    • Assist with and/or lead any GNY Divisional Music Groups, as assigned by the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director.
    • Work diligently in all areas of the corps ministry to enhance both the musical and spiritual growth of the participants within the music programs so that they can serve God in and through The Salvation Army.
    • Work to establish a vibrant divisional music ministry that allows individuals to use their gifts and talents to the fullest as they serve God.
    • Assist with any other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director.
    • All other duties as assigned 


    • Bachelor’s Degree in the field of music and/or relevant experience
    • Proficient pianist and accompanist, with experience in piano and vocal pedagogy preferred
    • Active uniformed Salvationist in good standing, who will soldier at a Corps in the Greater New York Division, appointed and approved by the Divisional Commander
