    SUPERVISES:            None                                       


    STATUS:                     Non-Exempt, Part-Time           


    SCHEDULE:               Monday- Friday, variable

    FUNCTION:                This position is responsible for coordinating with the Shelter Case Manager, Shelter Manager, and Social Ministries Director to provide age-appropriate learning activities in the areas of Nutrition, Health & Safety for children at the DHQ Salvation Army locations, works with parents to teach normal growth and development as well as appropriate parenting behaviors, identifies and plans appropriate field trips, and coordinates with the community to serve as a role model for the children. This position also serves as a support for the parents and an advocate for children with the education system. This position reports to the Housing Manager and works with case managers, social service workers, and other Salvation Army staff members.                            


    • Plans, implements, and assists with evaluation of a comprehensive children’s program.
    • Prepares Child/Parent Assessment Case Plans.
    • Works with the Shelter/Housing Manager and staff to develop and implement Nutrition, Health &     

                                            Safety programs designed to teach children how to make healthy life choices.

    • Coordinates with key staff and volunteers to provide high-quality evening programs and

                                           child care.

    •           Identifies and solicits individuals in the community to volunteer as speakers and role models.
    • Maintains awareness of current educational opportunities and resources in the community

                                        that may benefit the children and families.

    • Collects data required for reports to funders of children’s programs.
    • Serves as a role model, counselor, and support for parents.
    • Models appropriate disciplinary and parenting behaviors.
    • Teaches normal growth and development and appropriate parenting approaches at each

                                        developmental stage.

    • Coordinates with staff to assure that each student has the school supplies required and

                                           appropriate clothing for school.

    • Assist family with CPS enrollment and partner with school resources to meet the needs of the

                                           Child (i.e. Project Connect, School Records, IEPs, UpSprings).

    • Attends IEP meetings with parents when requested.


    •   Education:     Bachelor’s degree, in Education, Psychology (childhood) Social work or

                                                       Health education , preferred.      


    •   Experience:    Minimum two years professional experience.


    • Knowledge and Skills:


    • Knowledge of normal growth and development.
    • Proven record in organizing successful programs and events.
    • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with children, parents, volunteers and as

                                                         part of a professional team.

    • Must be able to relate to both parents and children from diverse backgrounds.
    • Maintain order and cleanliness of children’s areas in all Salvation Army shelters.
    • Requires valid driver’s license and ability to meet Salvation Army vehicle insurance   


    • Successful completion of Salvation Army criminal background checks.
