  • Overview

    Dental hygienist will remove soft and hard deposits from teeth, teach patients how to practice good oral hygiene, and provide other preventive dental care. The hygienist will examine patients’ teeth and gums, recording the presence of diseases or abnormalities. Dental hygienist will use an assortment of different tools to complete their tasks. Hand and rotary instruments and ultrasonic devices are used to clean and polish teeth, including removing calculus, stains, and plaque. Hygienists use x-ray machines to take dental pictures, and sometimes develop the film. They may use models of teeth to explain oral hygiene, perform root planning as a periodontal therapy, or apply cavity-preventative agents such as fluorides and pit and fissure sealants. Hygienists may also be required to place and carve filling materials, temporary fillings, and periodontal dressings; remove sutures; and smooth and polish metal restorations. 

     

    Hygienists will also helps patients develop and maintain good oral health. For example, they may explain the relationship between diet and oral health or inform patients how to select toothbrushes and show them how to brush and floss their teeth.

     

    Hygienists sometimes make a diagnosis and other times may prepare clinical and laboratory diagnostic tests for the dentist to interpret. Hygienists sometimes work chair side with the dentist during treatment.

    Responsibilities

    Technical/Comprehension

    • Demonstrates application of theory, principles and is knowledgeable of instrument uses
    • Demonstrates reliable and accurate work, uses appropriate technique for patient’s condition (as evaluated by the attending dentist)
    • Familiar with and follows proper sterilization procedures
    • Set-up trays with appropriate instruments and in advance of patient arrival
    • Familiar with equipment function and maintenance including changing traps, cold sterilization, washing jackets (uniforms), bio-hazard trash disposal, and cleaning water systems on scheduled days
    • Updates patient charts properly including notes about homecare, behavior and orthodontics
    • Applies fluoride to teeth
    • Assists with x-ray, sterilization and charting during peak times
    • Maintains orderly patient flow in bay area
    • Follows Asepsis Procedures with respect to barriers, masks, gloves, jackets, protective eyewear, and hazardous waste.
    • Displays appropriate patient management skills

      

    Communication Skills

    • Responds in a courteous and professional manner to patients/parents/coworkers
    • Establishes rapport with patients. Able to address children on their level and alleviate fear using positive reinforcement, Tell-Show-Do or other accepted techniques of patient management
    • Routinely checks with patients for discomfort
    • Discusses appropriate homecare instruction
    • Maintains confidentiality of all information including patient charts, personal salary, etc.

    • All three PA Clearances required upon employment and thereafter upon renewal date: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, Request for Criminal Record, and Fingerprint based federal criminal.
    • PA Mandated and Permissive Reporting and The Salvation Army's KeepSAfe training required.
