    Location/Department: GHAS, Marshall House Family Shelter (Hartford, CT)

    Status: Part-time, Non-Exempt

    Hours Per Week: 28

    Schedule: Schedule will be agreed upon at time of hire but will consist of hours between 5 p.m. - 1 a.m.

    Engage youth ages 18 to 24 in order to support them from moving from homelessness to permanent housing rapidly with the goal of increasing their access to community resources designed to address the medical, mental health, financial, emergency shelter, and other basic living and safety needs of disconnected youth.

    Responsibilities

    • Assist runaway, homeless, and street youth; ages 18 to 24; in crisis intervention, problem solving, action planning, and skill building, in order to address immediate life and safety issues.
    • Provide a supportive, encouraging environment and one-on-one support to youth.
    • Continuously and persistently provide support and tools so that youth can achieve goals on their housing plan in order to rapidly exit the shelter.
    • Screen and assess youth in order to determine admission to crisis shelter and provide diversion supports as needed.
    • Complete intakes on youth unable to be diverted from entering crisis shelter, including;
      • review rules and obtain signature,
      • fill out intake packet including release of information, and
      • familiarize participant with resources being offered, including onsite Housing Specialist services.
    • Work closely with the Housing Specialist in order to support individualized housing plans.
    • Build relationships with youth and their families and provide mediation when necessary.
    • Provide information on housing programs and community services available to youth.
    • Provide crisis intervention and the necessary support and resources to youth when situations arise (i.e. police, Mobile Crisis, drug treatment programs, medical or fire emergencies).
    • Conduct accurate and timely case and program record keeping, including data entry into HMIS.
    • Complete discharge procedure upon client’s exit including:
      • collect & wash linens,
      • make a discharge entry in the log book,
      • obtain a forwarding address, and
      • complete Exiting Procedure and Exit Form to obtain participant’s destination.
    • Maintain client confidentiality consistent with program policies.
    • Participate in supervision, staff meetings, trainings, and case conferences as required.
    • Provide personal hygiene items to youth as needed.
    • Provide coverage for the facility by monitoring the doors, cameras, and answering the phone.
    • Complete the following trainings: Housing First, Diversion, Positive Youth Development, Trauma Informed Care, Seeking Safety, De-escalation, Motivational Interviewing, SOAR, and others as required.

    Qualifications

    • High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of one year experience in social services required.
    • Lived experience with homelessness preferred.
    • Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred.
    • Familiarity and experience with service models such as Positive Youth Development, Motivational Interviewing, Housing First, Harm Reduction, and Trauma Informed Care preferred.
    • Ability to function independently, with excellent time management skills.
    • Ability to engage diverse populations.
    • Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
    • High energy level and solid work ethic.
    • Ability to respond to changing conditions.
    • Work well in a team atmosphere.
    • Will respect and promote the interest of The Salvation Army. The individual is not required to embrace the tenets of faith, but he/she is required to promote and respect the mission of The Salvation Army.
