    The Development Department of the Empire State Division has an exciting opportunity for a full-time Director of Advancement. 


    This key leadership position is accountable for the development and execution of a successful Divisional Fundraising Strategy, and provides support to  development staff across upstate NY. The Director of Advancement will have a strong understanding of our history, structure, and social service programs, as well as a strong commitment to The Salvation Army's mission.

    • Develop strategic long-term and operational plans for all areas of Fundraising, Marketing and Communications in partnership with the Divisional leadership to ensure an integrated and synchronized approach to the whole philanthropic mission of The Salvation Army as fulfilled in the Empire State Division.
    • Help shape overall policies and strategies to continually increase major gifts revenue and program growth.
    • Provide direction and guidance around expansion of local kettle programs and serve as key liaison for all kettle and direct response programs throughout the division.
    • Serve as an articulate, enthusiastic and visible spokesperson for The Salvation Army Empire State Division – locally, territorially and nationally.
    • Supervise and mentor development and communications staff creating in a team environment dedicated to carrying out the objectives of the Department.
    • Develop and maintain productive and respectful relationships with Advisory Boards, volunteers, donors, prospects, philanthropic communities and other related constituent groups.
    • Ensure coordination, collaboration among Area Services, as well as conducting orientations; providing training and evaluation of community relations and development functions.
    • Provide assistance and guidance to all Corps in the development of Advisory Boards and Councils throughout the Division. This includes, but is not limited to, the development of a training and support program for all Officers and staff to develop strong advisory organizations.
    • Provide consultations and direction to all Corps and divisional leadership in developing and strengthening relationships with United Way.
    • Supervise the service extension program consisting of volunteer management, program delivery and fundraising.
    • Supervise and coordinate the territorially supported Major and Planned Gift program by working in conjunction with other development and community relations functions.
    • Provide direction and oversight for marketing, communications, and public relations including all interactive website design and maintenance.
    • Participate in appropriate professional associations. 
    • Provide consultation and direction to Corps in all elements of the capital campaign process.  Monitor and provide reporting for all Capital Campaigns.
    • Facilitate education and communications within the Division regarding development and communications activities including utilizing the support and expertise of volunteers.
    • Manage a portfolio of high-level Division-wide major gift donors and assist Divisional Leadership in the same.
    • Implement a coordinated and systematic solicitation program of foundations and corporations.  
    • Establish and create a strategic communications plan to qualify, educate, cultivate and solicit gifts for all major donors each fiscal year.
    • Provide leadership for existing and new online fundraising strategies.
    • Report and process information requests from NHQ/THQ.


    • A Bachelor’s Degree with relevant advanced training or degree desired; Master’s Degree and CFRE designation preferred.
    • Ability to lead a team and proven experience in staff management.
    • Ability to set and achieve or exceed goals and meet deadlines.
    • A high level of comfort with direct donor interaction, including discussions of personal and family finances and asking for money is a must. 
    • Demonstrated ability to work independently in a complex environment, managing multiple projects and conflicting priorities.
    • Strong decision-maker with skillful approach that evaluates options, resources and outcomes in light of the strategic plan of the Division.
    • Advanced understanding of resource development and communications systems and programs and the professional knowledge to achieve department objectives.
    • Effective interpersonal, written and oral communications skills.
    • A proficiency in Word and Excel, as well as experience with donor tracking and/or database software is preferred. 
    • Valid driver’s license that meets The Salvation Army’s insurance requirements.
