    Position: 21st Century Tutor

    Department: The Salvation Army Pioneer Corps, 1920 Allegheny St., Philadelphia

    Availability of Position: Immediately - 3 positions available

    Schedule: Part-time, up to 12 hours per week during the school year, Monday – Thursday,  3-6 PM

    Reports to: 21st Century Site Coordinator

    Salary and Grade: $13.00 per hour; 74 Non-Exempt


    Tutors are responsible for picking up students from school and transporting them to The Salvation Army.  Provide homework assistance and reading enrichment, recreational activities, daily and weekly lesson pans and behavior report. Tutors serve neighborhood children as a reading and/or math tutor in The Salvation Army’s 21st Century Learning Center Programs.  The 21st Century will tutor in Do the Math, and After the Bell curriculums and must attend all trainings, be willing to learn their assigned curriculums, and develop and implement lessons.  Provide academic tutoring to assigned students, either in a group of up to 8-10 students and/or individually aimed at developing student mastery.  Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific material to improve academic capabilities in designated area.  Be responsible for lesson plans, parent progress reports, maintaining and updating daily tutor sheets and weekly student records.  Administer pre-assessment and on-going assessment tools and any other milestone testing deemed necessary.  Meet with students, teachers, parents and staff to develop specific achievement goals and the Individual Learning Plan for each student.  Provide timely feedback and positive reinforcement to students.  Serve as a role model.  The above list of job duties is not exclusive or exhaustive and the candidate will be required to undertake such tasks as may reasonably be expected within the scope of the post.


    • Must have high school diploma with at least 2 years of tutoring/teaching experience. 
    • Bachelor’s degree or degree in progress highly desired and preferred. 
    • Good interpersonal communication skills, strong organizational and classroom management skills.   
    • Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks:   PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. Candidate must also complete the mandated reporter child abuse training in accordance with PA Act 153 of 2014. 
    • Must have an understanding of and appreciation for the Mission of The Salvation Army.
