    Hours Per Week:  37.5

     

    Scope & Purpose of Position:

    The General Accountant reports to the Assistant Director of Finance in directing the principles, practices and procedures of accounting within an organization or company. This individual is instrumental in maintaining accountability of the financial resources of the business and safeguarding investor assets.

    Responsibilities

    • Close accounting records in a timely manner and distribute reports; review applicable month-end records and reports to assure accuracy and conformity with accounting standards; assist others in understanding by providing detailed analysis.
    • Assure sufficient funds are available for daily and immediate future requirements.
    • Assist in analyzing funds held at Territorial Headquarters (THQ), and assure proper recording of funds and preparation of year-end distribution.
    • Complete bank reconciliations and related journal entries and adjustments; bank statements must be reconciled to the general ledger on a timely basis and approved by the Assistant Director of Finance and Financial Secretary.
    • Prepare financial accounting for construction, purchase, and sale of property, maintaining detailed work papers detailing the above and preparing the additions and/or removals from property, plant and equipment ledgers processed and maintained at THQ; review ledgers to assure accuracy, and prepare and process necessary journal entries to record property transactions.
    • Assist in the preparation of Consolidation. Work with Assistant Director of Finance to prepare all schedules, analysis and provide all documentation required by THQ. Gain understanding of process and be able to back up as necessary.
    • Assist in the preparation of work papers for all audits such as government agencies, outside auditors, internal auditors, United Way or any others that are required of The Salvation Army.
    • Review and coding of Corporate Credit Card transactions through Smart Data system.
    • Act as the back-up for the preparation and processing of payroll.
    • Responsible for administration and processing of back-up petty cash fund.

    Qualifications

    • BA/BS in accounting/finance preferred or Associates degree with 5-10 years’ experience in accounting/finance or significant years of specific experience in accounting/finance especially in non-profit environment.
    • Detailed and analytically oriented
    • Must have the ability to solve complex accounting issues/problems with a firm grasp of generally-accepted accounting principles with an understanding of FASB pronouncements related to not-for-profit entities
    • Good presentation and interpersonal skills
    • Must be computer literate particularly regarding accounting software, spreadsheets and MS office
    • Must have the ability to work independently with little supervision
