Position:  Intake Worker

Department/Location: Social Services, Carlisle, PA Corps

Availability of Position: Immediate

Schedule: Part-Time less than 20 hours per week

Reporting Relationship:   Social Services Director

Salary and Grade: $11.80 per hour; 73 Non-Exempt


Position Overview:

The Social Services Intake Worker will serve as the frontline contact for clients coming into and calling the office.  The Intake Worker will; access client needs and process requests as appropriate, make referrals,

maintain client files, perform general office duties, carry out seasonal tasks and assist the Social Services Case Manager and Social Services Director as requested.



  • Answer phones for Social Services office, direct calls, take messages.
  • Greet clients and ascertain their reason for coming to the office. Make appropriate referrals to walk-in clients.
  • Conduct client assessments to determine needs.
  • Provide to and obtain from clients all necessary forms as required for the provision of the needed services.
  • Provide concrete services including but not limited to; clothing vouchers, emergency food, transportation assistance, homeless services.
  • Compile case notes.
  • Maintain client files including removal/storage of inactive files.
  • Interact with other agencies to maintain updated referral information.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum two years employment with high degree of interaction with people OR two years of higher education.
  • Good people skills including ability to communicate well and handle people in courteous and compassionate manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and professionally both verbally and in writing.
  • General knowledge of computers and software such as; Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.
  • As a Mandated Reporter, must provide proof of having completed training on recognizing and reporting child abuse meeting the training standards of PA Act 153 of 2014 within 30 days of  employment with recurrent training required every three years thereafter.
  • Meets the Child Protection Clearances required by PA Act 153 to include PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check.
  • Job applicant must have an understanding of the dual nature of Salvation Army mission, and able and willing to work within the scope of that mission.
