Overview

REPORTS TO:   Area Coordinator for Operations through the Director of Social Services through the Education Coordinator in coordination with Commanding Officers        

 

SUPERVISES:    Program Assistants, Paid or volunteer tutors                                   

 

STATUS:  full-time                                       

 

SCHEDULE:   non-exempt, 10:30a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

 

FUNCTION:  

   This position provides leadership to the Learning Center after school tutorial program at the Citadel site, including supervision of program assistant and all paid or volunteer tutors, continued relationship as liaison to local schools and implementation of curriculum and program evaluations.

Responsibilities

  • Implement The Salvation Army’s holistic approach to social service ministry by providing each client with information regarding corps worship services, corps community programs for adults and children, as well as other Salvation Army social service programs that would meet their need

 

  • Oversee all daily operations of The Learning Center, ensuring compliance with The Salvation Army policies and procedures and The Center’s plan for compliance with Ohio School Age Child Care Licensing Law

 

  • Communicate with Education Coordinator, Commanding Officers and other appropriate persons regarding use of the facility

 

  • Provide direct supervision and educational instruction for students from 3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. during the school year and for three or more hours during the summer

 

  • Coordinate weekly scheduling of activities, including educational programming, personal growth and social development.

 

  • Ensure academic instruction is consistent with the Columbus Public Schools curriculum benchmarks and the Ohio Department of Education state learning competencies

 

  • Promote and supervise activities which will aid in the healthy social, emotional, intellectual and physical development of each participant

 

  • Maintain an individual plan for each student which addresses their academic needs

 

  • Fulfill all administrative duties outside the hours of regular program operation (3:00 p.m.- 6:00 p.m. during the school year and 3 or more hours during the summer)

 

  • Coordinate the registration and orientation process for all applicants and parents

 

  • Maintain regular communication with Learning Center parents and relevant school staff

 

  • Internally refer Learning Center families to requested social services and contact with Commanding Officers

 

  • Maintain statistics for The Salvation Army, The United Way, and others as necessary for program evaluation

 

  • Work in coordination with Education Coordinator to network with community Columbus Public Schools for referral of potential participants

 

  • Collect all necessary assessment data for students from local schools

 

  • Work in coordination with Education Coordinator to recruit and train all volunteers, ensuring compliance with The Salvation Army’s policies and procedures and The Center’s plan for compliance with Ohio School Age Child Care Licensing Law

 

  • Maintain orderly personnel files for each student participant, volunteer, and Learning Center staff member

 

  • Maintain The Learning Center’s confidentiality

 

  • Maintain a personal program of professional development

 

  • Participate in regular program meetings with Learning Center staff and relevant community partners

 

  • Order needed materials and food for The Learning Center (Each participant must receive, at minimum, a daily nutritious snack)

 

  • Other duties and responsibilities as requested by the Education Coordinator

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development or comparable preferred OR two years working with children and progress toward a bachelor’s degree in Education, Child Development or comparable.
  • Participation in training for certification in first aid, communicable diseases, and child abuse prevention and recognition.
  • Willingness to uphold the mission of The Salvation Army.
  • Must obtain and maintain driving privileges per Salvation Army Insurance standards.
