The role of the Educational Specialist/Assistant to the Program Supervisor is to support the GAINS Program Supervisor with general office tasks related to the GAINS after school program and act as a liaison between the Program Directors and the public school. This will include meeting with Principals and teachers as needed and creating systems for obtaining and analyzing report card grades and standardize test results. The job requires travel to sites and working 5 days per week, Monday thru Fridays, 35 hours per week.


  • Know State and City mandates to insure the GAINS Program meets and maintains all requirements
  • Facilitate on-going training in areas such as lesson planning, classroom management, facilitation techniques and strategies to improve program quality
  • Document and maintain record of how often you meet with GAINS Program Directors and School Staff
  • Assist with outreach to community partnerships that will enhance the GAINS Program
  • Attend all required training classes
  • Arrange educational, cultural and social activities for students
  • Help create an environment of educational excellence by developing and conducting monthly staff meetings and trainings, supervision and fostering an environment of fun, professionalism and learning. Teamwork is important
  • Help develop staff to create lesson plans that are age appropriate, interactive and encourage social, emotional and educational curiosity
  • Review with Program Directors lesson plans prepared by all enrichment instructors
  • Observe /critic the implementation and delivery of established lessons. Meet to give insight and encouragement for improvement
  • Meet monthly to discuss students and their progress
  • Ability to work independently
  • Preparing payroll for the GAINS program:
  • Prepare permission slips for students
  • Placing and following up on Operational supply/furniture/equipment orders
  • Prepare mailings
  • Prepare and assist with monthly CACFP reports
  • Enter data into the computer
  • General office work filing, faxing, copying
  • Ability to lead projects to successful completion
  • Substitute for absent Group Leaders, when necessary
  • Supervise children on field trips, when necessary
  • Provide Administrative Support for over 9 DYCD Contracts Managed by The Salvation Army-GNY
  • Prepare requisitions for agency’s CFC Board approval
  • Maintain accurate accounting of contract spending for department by site
  • Prepare mailings to participant’s parents
  • Process all personnel and office related paperwork
  • Process or support the field sites with SCR, SEL and Fingerprinting
  • Secures appropriate resources for staff, parents and children to include supplies, equipment, and training materials
  • Additional duties as assigned 


  • Bachelor Degree in Education
  • Knowledgeable about school age children and have experience and/or received training in child/youth development or related fields
  • Experience in lesson planning, curriculum development and implementation of structured programing for students in elementary and/or middle school
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent filing and organizational skills
  • Extremely organized
  • Self-directed
  • Must be confidential when working with employee files and new hire packets
  • Positive attitude
