  • Overview

    Under the leadership of the Education Manager this position is responsible for providing a safe, caring and enriching learning environment for children enrolled in the Salvation Army Kroc Center’s summer camp. Counselors are responsible for conducting themselves in an appropriate manner by setting an example for children, parents/guardians, and co-workers in alignment with The Salvation Army’s core values. Counselors are responsible for complying with all licensing standards and regulations and will assist in ensuring that all adhere to Kroc Center policies and procedures. Counselors are responsible for leading groups of students in assigned activities, safeguarding group gear and implementing discipline procedures.



    1. Initiate and maintain positive relationships with all Kroc Center staff, guests, members, parents/guardians and children.
    2. Comply with all emergency procedures appropriate to the site and in conformity with procedures adopted by emergency service authorities to ensure the safety of the children and staff.
    3. Adhere to and ensure adherence to all The Salvation Army Kroc Corps Community Center policies and procedures as stated in manuals and all subsequent trainings and meetings.
    4. Attend all assigned meetings and trainings, including weekly staff meetings, as scheduled.
    5. Work in a team environment and encourage open communication regarding concerns/issues with the program, children, parents or co-workers.
    6. Assist in maintaining clean-up schedules to maintain the cleanliness of the Kroc Center including completion of task listed on daily clean-up check list.
    7. Communicate with the Education Manager daily regarding concerns/issues with the program, children, parents or co-workers.
    8. Keep a consistent headcount on all children present at site; communicate changes with all other staff and maintain accurate documentation of attendance, behavior and incidents for each child.
    9. Ensure that all staff and children are respectful of Kroc Center property; ensure all rules and regulations are followed.
    10. Role model dignity and respect for others at all times. Actively participate, while encouraging children, in programs and activities.
    11. Consistently demonstrate positive discipline; firmly and consistently enforce the rules; express clear expectations and accountability; ensure that reprimand fits the misbehavior.
    12. Enforce rules for behavior and procedures for maintaining an environment conducive to learning for all students.
    13. Help children to develop a positive self-esteem and sense of self-worth.
    14. Lead children through activities with enthusiasm and professionalism according to training protocol and scheduled program activities.
    15. Assist with the presentation of and lead daily programs offered: lessons, organized activities, theme activities, games, etc.
    16. Provide proper, and continuous, supervision for assigned group during all activities, while adhering to KeepSAfe policies and protocols.
    17. Consistently adhere and implement the process for child release from program to parent or authorized guardian.
    18. Communicate on a daily basis regarding the positive and negative behavior of their children by completing reports.
    19. Express appreciation for their interest in their child(s) participation in the program.

    Other duties as assigned.




    1. 18+ years of age, HS Diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
    2. Bilingual Spanish/English preferred.
    3. Experience working with children of varied ages and abilities in an urban setting is required.
    4. Experience supervising youth and presenting positive role modeling through all interactions required.
    5. Be reliable and dependable.
    6. Exercise mature judgment and sound decision making.
    7. Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
    8. Work a flexible schedule to meet program staffing/planning needs.
    9. TB test or chest x-ray with insignificant results.
    10. Physical by doctor or appropriate medical professional indicating eligibility to work.
    11. Fingerprinting and background check.
    12. Must provide three references.
