  • Overview

    The Corps Program Assistant/GAINS Music Instructor primary responsibility is to give oversight as directed by the Corps Officer for The Salvation Army programming and assist with administrative duties at the Bushwick Corps.  In addition, this position also will teach music lessons in various music types, such as vocal, piano, drums and brass within the GAINS After School Program.


    • Assist the Corps Officer with the development, planning and implementation of various programs, including but not limited to.
    • Assist the Corps Officer in providing leadership at events including assisting the Corps Officers in the promotion, registration and transportation of events/activities. Transportation could include driving to pick up donations, program participants, etc. 
    • Responsible for sharing with the Corps Commanding Officer, all matters of mutual concern relating to the total welfare of the Corps Program.
    • Assist with the administrative duties within the corps as directed by the Corps Officer.
    • Assist in coordinating with Music Leaders to promote our music ministry and programming in the Corps including but not limited to brass music, piano and vocal music, sacred dance and Timbrels in cooperation with Divisional Headquarters
    • Assist in aspects of public relations events and campaigns as assigned by Corps Officers, including but not limited to, the Christmas Kettle campaign and other fundraising events.
    • Assist with driving and organizing the Christmas Kettle effort.
    • Assist with various worship, praise, prayer, and evangelism services such as teaching Sunday School classes, lead or assist with bible studies, Men/Women fellowship programs, outreach programs, League of Mercy, etc.
    • Assist as needed for general, daily Corps support needs and performs special projects as assigned by the Corps Officers.
    • Develop and maintain an intensive relational ministry with the congregation of the Corps.
    • Teach group and / or private music lessons in various media types, including vocal.
    • Prepare lesson plans for applicable classes.
    • Provide attendance and registration.
    • Evaluate student performance and learning.
    • Provide regular and timely evaluation feedback to students.
    • Provide student learning outcomes and program learning outcomes to GAINS Program Director.
    • Assist in the recruitment of new students.
    • Participate in regular in-service training sessions as directed. 


    • HS Diploma (or equivalent)
    • At least one year of formal music education training preferred.
    • One (1) or more years of experience in teaching music classes.
    • Must have a valid NY Driver’s License
    • A uniformed Salvationist, in good standing.
    • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
    • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office, Word, and others as required.
    • Patient and able to assist, work with and develop children
    • Ability to teach, supervise and mentor music students.
    • Ability to play musical instrument(s).
    • Ability to read music.
    • Ability to perform comfortably in a variety of settings.
    • Ability to interact with different age groups.
    • Ability to interact with co-workers and the public in a positive, professional manner.
    • Ability to work with people of diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
    • Ability to work a varied schedule, including nights and weekends.
    • Knowledge of musical styles and techniques.
