Location/Department: Stamford Corps (Stamford, CT)

Status: Part-time, Non-exempt

Hours Per Week: 25

Schedule: Monday – Friday, 10:00 am – 3:00 pm


Scope & Purpose of Position:

Shall provide a variety of services to individuals in need and assist them with identifying and addressing the root causes of their situation.  Educate the community regarding the various social service programs of the Stamford Corps. Assist in productively developing and expanding the social service ministries programs of the Stamford Corps.

  • Maintain confidentiality and exhibit loyalty to The Salvation Army in all job related matters.


  • Provide all forms of direct service to clients including, but not limited to intake/assessment, referrals, advocacy and the provision of material assistance based upon guidelines, available resources, and policies and procedures of The Salvation Army.

  • Provide clients with information on and referrals to appropriate Salvation Army programs and other community resources.

  • Establish and maintain a database of community resources in order to refer clients to other locations that may be helpful in addressing their needs.

  • Discuss special cases with the Corps Officers in an attempt to resolve client situations.

  • Refer clients seeking spiritual guidance to the Corps Officers.

Food Pantry & Diaper Bank

  • Coordinate all aspects of the food pantry in accordance with established policies.

  • Prepare orders for necessary items to adequately stock the food pantry and diaper bank. Seek approval from Corps Officers prior to placing orders.

Program Coordination

  • Assist in the team coordination of various Corps social services programs, activities and services, including seasonal programming, such as; youth camp, Christmas toy sign ups, and the holiday meal program.
  • Participate in bi-weekly case consultation meetings with the Corps Officers.
  • Connect program participants from the social services ministries programs to Corps Ministries programs, i.e., Sunday Services, Youth and Adult Ministries, etc. when appropriate.
  • Develop and expand the social service ministries programs of the Stamford Corps in conjunction with the Corps Officers and the Divisional Social Services Director to include, but not limited too; Life Skills and Parenting Skills workshops.

Community Outreach

  • Keep abreast of community issues and services by visiting other community agencies.

  • Represent The Salvation Army at social service community functions and meetings to become familiar with available resources to provide adequate referrals to our consumers as deemed appropriate by the Corps Officers.

  • Meet with various organizations and businesses within the community in order to inform them of the Stamford Corps’ programs, events, and seasonal distributions which are provided based on the need of the community.

General Office Maintenance and Coordination

  • Assist in the daily maintenance of the social services office organization. These tasks may include general office management such as typing, filing, computer use, and mailing preparation.

  • Keep workspace neat and clean.

Record Keeping

  • Maintain confidential client files and accurate records with pertinent information including services provided and a plan of action.

  • Coordinate monthly statistics and submit them accordingly.

  • AA or BA in social service or related field

  • Minimum of two of years of work experience in social services or related field

  • Experience developing and implementing social service programs based on community needs

  • Knowledge of community resources

  • Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred

  • Proficient spoken and written English experience in public speaking.

  • Valid driver’s license

  • Ability to organize responsibilities and function independently

  • Excellent time management skills required

  • Demonstrate excellent ability to engage with diverse populations

  • Ability to communicate clearly both verbally and in writing

  • Must have a high energy level and solid work ethic, as well as the ability to respond to changing conditions

  • Must work well in a team atmosphere

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Internet Explorer
