Overview

Unit: New Britain Corps Men’s Emergency Shelter (New Britain, CT)

 

Status: On-Call & Part-time, Non-Exempt (On-call employees are called when a regularly schedule part-time/full-time employee is unable to be at work.  There are not set number of hours or a set schedule for this position.)

 

Supervisor: Shelter Director

Responsibilities

  1. Greet resident at the entrance and take each new resident through appropriate intake procedure, which includes:
    • Have client fill out intake application,
    • Make a copy of a photo identification,
    • Have client fill out rules and regulations and release of information forms, and
    • Review documents at time of intake to insure all necessary info has been completed.

  2. Administer a sobriety test of each resident and conduct a search for each resident and any belongings each time they enter the shelter building.

  3. Ask each client to surrender prescription medications and lock in office cabinet.

  4. Assign a bed, sheets, and when necessary, a towel to each client.

  5. Supervise clients during meal times.

  6. Monitor the clean up after meals and making of beds.

  7. Monitor the resident laundry sign-up sheet and the laundry room when residents are completing their laundry.

  8. See that the lights are turned off and the building is locked at 11:30 pm.

  9. Perform an hourly check of the entire building, including sleeping area.

  10. Wash the resident sheets, towels, and other shelter items required to be washing if working the 1:00 am to 7:00 am shift. Additionally, when clients are sleeping the downstairs will be straightened, dusted, swept, and mopped.

  11. Prepare continental breakfast at 6:00 am to be served at 6:30 am.

  12. Wake and supervise residents at 6:30 am as they eat breakfast and prepare to leave.

  13. Review house rules with residents, as needed, and inform them of the consequences of noncompliance. Additionally, make residents aware of their rights to appeal and the proper procedure for any and all appeals.

  14. Keep a nightly log of activities and initial upon completion.

  15. Report and expulsion, injuries, and /or police assistance to the Shelter Director within 24 hours.

  16. Answer the telephone during your shift and turn in referrals and messages to the Shelter Director.

  17. Clean the intake office at the end of your shift.

  18. Monitor linens in possession of residents, wash as needed.

  19. Collect all property of the shelter from the resident upon resident is moving out (includes sheets, blankets, towels, etc.).

  20. Attend staff meetings as required.

The above duties are not all inclusive and may be modified to include other job related duties at the discretion of the supervisor.
