    The Salvation Army Poughkeepsie Worship Center is a part of one the largest non-profit organizations in NYC. Our mission is to improve the lives of families through preaching the Word of God, childcare service, recreational services and social services. We truly believe that we can have a positive impact on the young people and adults who live in this community and we are looking for persons who would like to be part of this team.

    The Social Worker / Administrative Assistant will be an integral part of The Salvation Army Poughkeepsie Corps Ministry team that will be primarily focused on assessing and meeting the immediate needs of the community. The Social Worker / Administrative Assistant will support existing social work programs and seek to develop additional programs as needed by the community. The Social Worker / Administrative Assistant should have a desire to connect the clients with resources to meet their physical, emotional and spiritual needs in this holistic ministry. This is a ministry position according to The Salvation Army Mission Statement.


    • Attend all calls
    • Conducts initial intake on client, assessing the need
    • Keep accurate and confidential record of each client served
    • Provide accurate assistance to clients according to their need
    • Prepare Assistance vouchers to Thrift Stores when necessary
    • Make referrals to other agencies as needed
    • Order Supplies from the food bank as needed. Pick up the food and stock pantry
    • Prepare grocery bags and distribute food bags to clients
    • Handle the Good Neighborhood Fund clients
    • Sort all donated food, checking for any discarding outdated/damage materials
    • Provide occasional visits or phone calls for follow-up as requested by client and Corps Commanding Officers
    • Record accurately monthly statistics in compliance with The Salvation Army guidelines
    • Attend community related meetings as requested by Corps Commanding Officers
    • Coordinate seasonal assistance at Christmas time
    • Develop and initiate new programs based on the needs of the clients
    • Provide spiritual guidance to clients
    • Attend monthly Advisory Board Meetings and present report
    • Connect client with other services offered by The Salvation Army
    • Supervising the front lobby area and greeting those that enter directing them to proper area of service
    • Making weekly deposits and prepare income and expense vouchers to be sent to Divisional Headquarters
    • Make sure that all mail is ready for post office on a daily basis
    • Maintaining files and ordering office supplies as needed
    • Handle all correspondence related to Social work, Advisory Board, Thank you letters.
    • Confidentiality a must
    • Responsible to open and closed the building when required
    • Responsibilities will also include motivating others into service back to the community through appropriate channels and avenues within the corps programing as well as initial consultation to disperse information relating to Salvation Army programing and services.
    • The Social Worker /Administrative Assistant is responsible to the Corps Commanding Officers to perform any additional assignments under their direction
    • The Salvation Army has the right to modify, delete or add to this job description 


    • Must Have a High School Diploma
    • A minimum of 3 years’ experience in Social Services
    • Self-Motivated, self-starter
    • Able to maintain confidentiality
    • Able to navigate community resources
    • Sensitive to individual’s cases
    • Strong Communication and organizational Skills
    • Able to compile statistics according to Salvation Army guidelines
    • Commitment to the mission and ministry of The Salvation Army
    • Proficiency in computer programs such as Microsoft Office software and others as required,
    • Ability to manage and motivate volunteers workers
    • A Christian salvationist preferred
