Location/Department: Providence Citadel Corps (Providence, RI) & Rhode Island State Office (Cranston, RI)

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours per Week: 29

Schedule: Monday - Thursday, 9:30 am - 3:00 pm & Sunday, 1:00 pm - 6:00 pm

Responsibilities

This position is responsible for performing custodial duties, minor maintenance, and other miscellaneous duties in order to ensure that The Salvation Army buildings and facilities located at 386 Broad Street, Providence, RI and 34 Commercial Street, Cranston, RI are maintained in a healthy, safe, and sanitary manner.  This position does require a valid driver’s license and approval by The Salvation Army after completing a motor vehicle report.

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Custodian:
    • Clean building floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, and/or vacuuming.
    • Gather and empty trash.
    • Service, clean, and supply restrooms.
    • Clean and polish furniture and fixtures.
    • Clean windows, glass partitions, and mirrors.
    • Dust furniture, walls, machines, and equipment.
    • Make adjustments and minor repairs to heating, cooling, ventilating, plumbing, and electrical systems.
    • Mix water and detergents or acids in containers to prepare cleaning solutions, according to specifications.
    • Steam-clean or shampoo carpets.
    • Strip, seal, finish, and polish floors.
    • Follow procedures for the use of chemical cleaners and power equipment, in order to prevent damage to floors and fixtures.
    • Monitor building security and safety by preforming such tasks as locking doors after operating hours and checking electrical appliance use to ensure that hazards are not created.
    • Move heavy furniture, equipment, and supplies, either manually or by using hand trucks.
    • Mow and trim lawns and shrubbery, using mowers and hand and power trimmers, and clear debris from grounds and surrounding areas.
    • Notify supervisor concerning the needs for major repairs or additions to building operating systems.
    • Detail and monitor vehicles for inspections and/or repairs.
    • Remove snow from sidewalks, driveways, and parking areas using snow blowers, snow shovels, and spreading snow melting chemicals.
    • Requisition supplies and equipment needed for cleaning and maintenance duties.
    • Set up, arrange, and remove decoration, tables, chairs, ladders, and scaffoldings to prepare facilities for events such as banquets and meetings.
    • Spray insecticides and fumigants to prevent insects and rodent infestations.
    • Monitor and work with volunteers assigned to complete volunteer or community service hours.
    • Clean, paint, and/or repair Kettle signs and stands as needed.
  • Driver:
    • Transport people and pick up food and supplies.
    • Run general errands.
    • Distribute and collect Kettle stands and signs to stores as requested.
    • Participate, as needed, for Holiday sign-ups and distribution days.
    • Assist in collection of food and toys donated from different locations.
    • Drive as requested during Holiday season.
  • Cook:
    • Prepare and serve meals, plan menus, purchase food within the approved budget, and perform other activities and tasks associated with serving of meals.
    • Assist in the maintenance and upkeep of the kitchen as well as the food storage areas.
    • Provide training, oversight, scheduling and, in part, the recruitment of volunteers involved in the Community Meal.
    • Purchase, plan and prepare food for special events such as Advisory Board, Corps Council, and other committee meetings.
    • Shall attend staff meetings/trainings as needed.
    • Maintain records needed for statistical and inspection purposes. All statistics must be submitted timely and accurately for reporting purposes.

Qualifications

  • Shall maintain a valid driver’s license, free of restriction by either the granting state or Chesterfield Insurance
  • Shall obtain and maintain a valid Safe Serve certification. Classes required to maintain that certification shall be at the expense of the command. Should multiple test taking be required beyond the initial exam, the cost therefore shall be borne 50% by the employee and 50% by the command. Failure to maintain these licenses may result in termination.
  • Shall possess reasonable planning, organizational, and management skills.

Work Environment/Physical Demands:

This is a physically demanding position.  The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing, walking, lifting heavy objects, operating medium weight cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, sweeping, mopping floors, and moving furniture.  The incumbent is required to do a great deal of stretching and bending, often in awkward positions.  Operating floor polishers and waxers are particularly hard on back muscles.

 

In addition, this work involves, on a daily basis, contact with dangerous and toxic cleaning products that can be very harmful to one’s health if not properly utilized.  In some cases these products give off unpleasant odors.
