Under the supervision of the Corps Officers, the cook is primarily responsible for preparing and serving all food in the center and for maintaining the kitchen in a sanitary and efficient condition. Additionally, the cook is responsible for the supervision and training of other staff or volunteers assigned to kitchen.


  • Follow individual work schedule provided be the Corps Officer
  • Cooperates in total staff effort designed to improve the center’s services.
  • Participates in periodic individual conferences and regular staff meetings as scheduled by the Corps Officer.
  • Maintaining NYC/ State required sanitary practices within the work space.
  • Responsible in maintaining all kitchen equipment within good working condition as well as reporting any needs, discrepancies, or failed equipment to Corps Officer.
  • Responsible for storing and supervision of storage of all food and household supplies
  • Other related duties, as assigned, consistent with the above.


  • High School Diploma or Equivalent.
  • NYC Department of Health Certificate/ Food Handlers License.
  • Minimum of 5years kitchen/ cooking experience in residential shelter/ facility.
  • Experience in nutritious menu preparation, inventory, and food purchase.
  • Knowledge and experience in operating commercial equipment.
  • Two or more years of experience in food preparation (preferable in large quantities), dishwashing and housekeeping.
  • Ability to read and write in order to follow written menus, recipes, and work schedules.
  • Ability to keep simple inventory of supplies on hand as needed.
  • Must be able to prepare a variety of menus in accordance with nutritional guidelines as stated by the City of New York.
  • Must present a friendly and cheerful disposition and have the ability to maintain a cooperative relationship with other staff, clients, volunteers, and visitors within the Corps.
  • Ability to maintain sanitary work and personal habits.
  • Ability to lift 25-50 lbs.
  • Annual PPD and physical examination required after employment.
  • SafeServ Food Handlers Certification required upon or within 3 months of employment.
