Overview

Under the supervision of the Corps Officers, the cook is primarily responsible for preparing and serving all food in the center and for maintaining the kitchen in a sanitary and efficient condition. Additionally, the cook is responsible for the supervision and training of other staff or volunteers assigned to kitchen.

Responsibilities

  • Follow individual work schedule provided by the Corps Officer to indicate specific responsibilities and the time scheduled for them.
  • Cooperates in total staff effort designed to improve the center’s services.
  • Participates in periodic individual conferences and regular staff meetings as scheduled by the Corps Officer. These conferences will be called when changes are planned in the Soup Kitchen, After-School Program or Summer Day Camp which affects the cook so that discussions and suggestions for improving the services may be shared among the Corps Officer and staff. Such meetings will also be called when policy or changes are to be made affecting budgetary needs for food and supplies or rearrangement of space.
  • Maintain Gift-in-Kind Reports of food donations, and various kitchen donations
  • Serve as TSA Brooklyn Bedford’s representative at required meetings by HYPNAP or any other food related organization.
  • Maintain compliance for all food vendors and networks.
  • Ability to lift 25-50 lbs.
  • Prepare, cook and serve food according to recommended practices.
  • Follow weekly menus made in consultation with the Corps Officer/. Confer with the Corps Officer when menu changes are indicated, i.e., necessary substitution or the use of leftovers.
  • Wash dishes and utensils according to sanitary practices.
  • Keep kitchen, storeroom and dining room in clean, sanitary and orderly condition, i.e., range, sink, refrigeration, cupboards, etc.
  • Keep kitchen equipment and utensils in good condition.
  • Place kitchen garbage in designated covered receptacle.
  • Keep simple inventory of food and household supplies on hand as needed.
  • Inform Corps Officer of needed food supplies, repairs, and replacement of kitchen equipment and utensils.
  • Be responsible for storing or for supervising the storage of all food and household supplies
  • Other related duties, as assigned, consistent with the above.

Qualifications

  • Two or more years of experience in food preparation (preferably in large quantities), dishwashing and housekeeping.
  • Ability to read and write in order to follow written menus, recipes and work schedules. Ability to keep simple inventory of supplies on hand as needed.
  • Must be able to prepare a variety of menus in accordance with the nutritional guidelines as stated by the City of New York.
  • Friendly, cheerful personality and ability to maintain cooperative relationship with other staff, clients, volunteers and visitors to the center.
  • Ability to maintain sanitary work and personal habits.
  • Annual PPD and physical examination after employment.
  • SafeServ Food Handlers Certification required within three months of employment.
