Position: 21st Century Tutor in Math/Reading – 3 Tutor positions

Department: The Salvation Army (Tabernacle Community Center), 3150 Mascher Street/D & Allegheny Avenue (Elkin Elementary School)

Availability of Position: Immediately

Schedule: Part-time, 12 hours per week during the school year, (Monday - Friday); 24 hours per week during the summer, (Monday –Thursday), work schedule will compliment site.

Reports to: 21st Century Site Coordinator

Salary and Grade: $13 per hour; 74 non-exempt


Position Overview:


Serve neighborhood children as a reading and/or math tutor in The Salvation Army’s 21st Century Learning Program.


Serve neighborhood children as a reading and/or math tutor in The Salvation Army’s 21st Century LearningProgram.  The 21st Century will tutor in Saxon Math, Language!, Do  the Math, and Before the Bell curriculums and must attend all trainings, be willing to learn their assigned curriculums, and develop and implement lessons.  Provide academic tutoring to assigned students, either in a group of 5 students and/or individually aimed at developing student mastery.  Assist students in achieving a better understanding of specific material to improve academic capabilities in designated area.  Be responsible for maintaining and updating daily and weekly student records.  Administer pre-assessment and on-going assessment tools and any other testing deemed necessary.  Meet with students, teachers, parents and staff to develop specific achievement goals and the Individual Learning Plan for each student.  Provide timely feedback and positive reinforcement to students.  Serve as a role model.  Perform related duties as needed. 



  • Must have high school diploma with at least 2 years of tutoring/teaching experience. 
  • Bachelor’s degree or degree in progress highly desired and preferred. 
  • Good interpersonal communication skills, strong organizational and classroom management skills.   
  • Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks:   PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. Candidate must also complete the mandated reporter child abuse training in accordance with PA Act 153 of 2014. 
  • Must have an understanding of and appreciation for the Mission of The Salvation Army.
