Overview

The Director of Community Engagement will serve in a critical support role to the Corps Officers and a major leadership role within the Bushwick Corps. They will be intimately and integrally involved in the ministry of Corps and community center. This will include overseeing all community center programs.

 

Responsibilities

  • Involvement in the total Corps program with willingness to help in all areas as needed, including dining room, outdoor/indoor activities, children with problems, daily assembly, etc.
  • Promote observance of the moral and ethical codes affecting Entire Bushwick Corps Community.
  • Attend and contribute to Executive Leadership, Department Staff & General Staff Meetings.
  • Responsible for sharing with the Corps Commanding Officer, all matters of mutual concern relating to the total welfare of the Corps Program.
  • Responsible to attend, contribute & lead Orientation Sessions, as assigned and attend all parent meetings
  • To arrive on time and be ready to work  
  • To develop, promote and provide supervision of regular recreational, educational and spiritual programs to meet the needs and interests of Teens, Young Adults, Adults & Senior Citizens.
  • To oversee all program components including schedule of activities, building security, membership fees, budget, property, etc.
  • To train or mentor youth for occupational endeavors and foster leadership whenever possible.
  • To organize fundraisers assisting in funding the community Center Program.
  • To ensure a suitable atmosphere throughout the Community Center area, that is consistent with Army standards and policies
  • To bring to the attention of the Corps Officers, any problems and or/needs of the Center, and must keep the Corps Officers informed about Center activities.
  • To organize and supervise all Community Center special events
  • To serve as a liaison between the Community Center and the Salvation Army Church seeking to establish a close relationship with the Corps and its activities.
  • To serve on the Corps Planning Committees as directed by the Corps Officers
  • To maintain daily cleanliness of all areas utilized in the Community Center Programs
  • To keep complete and accurate records of equipment, correspondence, inventories, purchases, staff membership, attendance, budgets, etc. These records should be easily interpreted and readily accessible.
  • The Director should be identified with all phases of on-going operation and designate specific groups to aides and leaders.
  • Assume leadership of Corps Operations, in the absence of the Corps Officers
  • Initiate and maintain an outreach Hispanic ministry directed to families of the community
  • Be prepared to participate in Sunday Worship as assigned by Corps Officers
  • Responsible for the complete and overall supervision of the Corps’ participation in the Summer Youth Employment Program, under the direction of the Corps Officers
  • Responsible for the oversight of Emergency Disaster Services response for communities within the Corps’ coverage area
  • Coordinate all activities relative to the Red Kettle effort, under the direction of the Corps Officers, including recruiting, training and instructing of potential employees
  • Responsible for the development of the Corps Social & Digital Media platforms for outreach purposes, under the direction of the Corps Officers
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of adult ministries, including ongoing programming and special events.
  • Assist in bridging students into evangelistic and discipleship ministries.
  • Assist in providing leadership for corps delegations at divisional and territorial events as assigned by the Corps Officers, including assisting the Corps Officers in the promotion, registration and transportation of these events.
  • Assist in providing transportation for soldiers and members for corps programming as needed
  • Assist in aspects of public relations events and campaigns as assigned by the Corps Officers
  • Assist with administrative responsibilities
  • Develop music programs for corps and community center
  • Supervise maintenance department 

Qualifications

  • Must be a Uniformed Salvationist attending the Brooklyn Bushwick Corps regularly
  • High School Diploma with at least six years of successful experience as an assistant director of a Community Center, Program Director, or leader in a recreational program, a group work program, or closely related field OR an Associate’s Degree with at least four years of experience as noted above OR a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Recreation or equivalent experience with at least two years of experience as noted above
  • Strong communication and organizational skills; Should possess those qualities of heart, mind, and character that apply to all those working intimately with people.
  • Valid Driver’s License required, with a willingness and ability to drive a 12-Passenger Van
