Overview

The Program Assistant will serve in a critical support role to the Corps Officers and a major leadership role within the Brooklyn Brownsville Corps, under the direct supervision of the Director of Community Engagement. They will be intimately and integrally involved in the outreach ministry of Corps, including teaching, leading and preaching the Gospel Message. The Program Assistant should remain teachable and possess a passion to further the cause of Christ.

The Program Assistant will assist the Director of Community Engagement with the overall operations of the Night Center program. They will be responsible to manage the program in adherence with appropriate agency & external regulations.   They will be responsible to monitor and support staff and implement curriculum activities.

The Program Assistant will be accountable to standards of professionalism and Christian character. They will be expected to comport themselves appropriately, at all times (on and off duty), as they will be expected to be a Christian role model for all those they come into contact with, while carrying out their duties.

Responsibilities

  • Involvement in the total program with willingness to help in all areas as needed, including dining room, outdoor/indoor activities, participants with problems, daily devotions, etc.
  • Promote observance of the moral and ethical code affecting participants and staff.
  • Attend and contribute to Program Leadership Meetings, whilst helping to plan and conduct General Staff Meetings.
  • Responsible for sharing with the Director of Community Engagement and/or Corps Officers, all matters of mutual concern relating to the total welfare of the program.
  • Assists Director of Community Engagement, in advancing the Mission of The Salvation Army
  • Under the leadership of the Director of Community Engagement, assume responsibility for the daily supervision and safety of all participants.
  • Assume leadership of the Program, in the absence of Director of Community Engagement
  • Plan and/or follow the daily activities scheduled for the participants
  • Supervise organized games and activities.
  • Interacting with city, state agencies to ensure compliance with regulations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of the daily schedule for the program.
  • Assist with matters related to the operation program, including participant and staff discipline.
  • Assist in the coordination of field trips and daily activities for all participants.
  • Help maintain and ensure that participants & staff records are up to date and readily available for inspections; make changes, discharges and follow-ups as necessary
  • Responsible to complete daily facility inspections and maintain cleanliness.
  • Responsible to supervise of all employed and consultant personnel  

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma (or equivalent) with at least 2 years of college with 18 credits in child development, elementary education, physical education or related field OR Bachelor’s Degree with relevant experience
  • Experience in Youth Work or Camp Experience and at least 1 year administrative/supervisory experience
  • Must have at least 2 years of direct experience working with young adults (ages 17 - 30)
  • Ability to assume responsibilities of Director of Community Engagement, in their absence
  • Current CPR & First Aid Certifications
