Overview

Custodian at Harlem Temple Corps. The Custodian reports to the Maintenance Supervisor or his/her absence to the Business Manager. Works in the housekeeping department performing the tasks related to keeping the appearance of the building clean and orderly and generally serving the residents.

The essential functions of the job include, but are not limited to the duties listed on the job description.

Responsibilities

  • Performs Housekeeping chores as assigned. These may include but not limited to the following:
  • Maintain an inventory of housekeeping and maintenance supplies and notify business Manager of any orders needed.
  • Daily cleaning and sanitizing all bathroom sinks, showers, and toilets.
  • Sweep, vacuum, mopping all floors including waxing and buffing, as needed.
  • Daily wash-off tables after Community feeding, sweeping and mopping floors in dining area.
  • Hallway sweeping, dusting, and mopping.
  • Keeping all building entrances and exits clear of any obstructions and in compliance to the N.Y.C. Fire Safety stipulations.
  • Cleaning entrance of building; hose sidewalk and entrance when required.
  • Daily bag trash after meals, remove garbage debris to proper areas.
  • Remove ice and snow when required.
  • Attend training classes on training procedures, including food handling and other classes scheduled by the management as requested.  
  • Consistently reports to work on time and is ready to begin work at the start of the shift
  • Always provides proper notification when late absent.
  • Demonstrates reliability when on-call. Available to work overtime when necessary (Only non-Exempt employees).
  • Demonstrates the ability to recognize priorities in organization of workflow.
  • Able to perform duties independently, with minimal need of direct supervision.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of clients, shelter/program, agency, and/or The Salvation Army
  • Wears I.D. badge while on duty.
  • Demonstrates the ability to interact in a positive and helpful manner with clients, visitors, contract staff, volunteers, and co-workers.
  • Reflects commitment to building a supportive work environment and maintains a positive attitude at the work place and towards job.
  • Projects a good image in dealing with the public and clients.      
  • Is willing to make an extra effort to help build a quality and caring shelter/program.

 

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Respect and Consideration for the needs of homeless adults
