Overview

The individual should be familiar with the mission statement of the Salvation Army. Individual sensitivity to various cultural and social needs is essential for the preparation of meals and the creation of a hospitable soup kitchen environment. It is expected that the individual will conduct themselves in a highly professional manner demonstrating good character and knowledge in all aspects of culinary training.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare menus.
  • Prepare meals for the day.
  • Ready dining room to serve meals.
  • Open and close soup kitchen on time.
  • Maintain a member sign in sheet.
  • Serve all members of community attending soup kitchen.
  • Clean and store all soup kitchen supplies, materials and appliances.
  • Report to officers of materials and supplies needed.
  • Maintain inventory.
  • Maintain pantry clean and organized.
  • Maintain kitchen and dining room environmental specific to New York City Department of Health code.
  • Be available to prepare other meals as assigned by Corps. Officers. ex: Advisory board meeting, special community meetings, volunteer lunches etc.

Qualifications

  • Must be Bilingual (English and Spanish)
  • Demonstrate a continued interest in attending food handlers seminar, classes and training as required by the New York City Department of Health
  • Be able to work with children, the elderly, and Special Education populations.
  • Demonstrate an ability and interest in working with others.
  • At least 1 to 2 years Work experience.
  • Capable of climbing stairs and lifting heavy items.
  • Maintain large appliances clean and organized. Ex: Refrigerator
  • Report any and all complications to the officers.
