Overview

The Salvation Army’s Springfield Corps., is hiring a Gun Violence Prevention Educator and offers the following benefit package to part-time employees:

Location: 170 Pearl St., Springfield, MA

Hours/week: 20 hours per week

                      Tuesday: 11:00am – 6:00pm

                      Wednesday: 11:00am – 6:00pm

                      Thursday: 12:00pm – 6:00pm

Exemption: Non-exempt

Pay Range: $16.00 - $25.00 per hour

*starting pay varies depending on experience and qualifications*

 

The Gun Violence Prevention Educator is responsible for designing, implementing, and teaching educational programs aimed at reducing gun violence for at-risk youth. The educator will work with various stakeholders, including schools, community organizations, law enforcement, and local government, to promote gun safety, awareness, and conflict resolution strategies for at-risk youth. The role involves delivering training, conducting workshops, and supporting efforts to prevent gun violence through proactive education and community engagement.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  1. Program Development & Delivery:
  2. Develop and implement educational programs focused on gun violence prevention, including gun safety, conflict resolution, and emotional regulation strategies.
  3. Create curriculum and training materials tailored to different age groups and community demographics.
  4. Lead and facilitate workshops, seminars, and outreach activities to raise awareness and educate youth about the risks of gun violence.

 

  1. Community Outreach & Engagement:
  2. Establish and maintain relationships with local schools, community organizations, and other stakeholders to promote gun violence prevention initiatives.
  3. Organize and participate in community events, forums, and discussions to increase awareness and build partnerships.
  4. Provide resources and support to community members and families affected by gun violence.

 

  1. Data Collection & Reporting:
  2. Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of gun violence prevention programs.
  3. Collect data through surveys, focus groups, and feedback to assess program outcomes and community impact.
  4. Prepare and submit regular reports on program progress, community engagement, and educational outcomes.

 

  1. Advocacy & Public Speaking:
  2. Represent the organization at local government meetings, community gatherings, and other public forums to advocate for policies that reduce gun violence.
  3. Engage in public speaking opportunities to educate diverse audiences about the importance of gun violence prevention.

 

  1. Collaboration with Law Enforcement & Stakeholders:
  2. Work closely with law enforcement agencies, local officials, and other partners to support gun violence prevention strategies and policies.
  3. Collaborate with mental health professionals and social service agencies to address the root causes of violence and offer support to those impacted.

 

  1. Resource Development & Distribution:
  2. Develop and distribute educational materials, such as pamphlets, posters, and digital content, to inform the community about gun violence prevention measures.
  3. Provide training to school staff, parents, and other community leaders on identifying warning signs of violence and how to respond effectively.

 

  1. Crisis Intervention & Support:
  2. Assist in the coordination of crisis intervention services for individuals or families impacted by gun violence.
  3. Offer guidance and resources to those who have experienced gun violence to help them heal and rebuild.

 

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

Education Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, public health, criminal justice, or a related field (Master's degree preferred) or 10 years’ experience
  • Certification in violence prevention or conflict resolution.

 

Work Experience:

  • Proven experience in community outreach, violence prevention, or education, with a focus on gun violence or related areas.
  • Experience in program development, evaluation, and reporting.
  • Experience working with youth, families, or marginalized communities.

 

Other Qualifications:

  • Strong understanding of gun violence issues, prevention strategies, and relevant laws and policies.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Passionate about community education, social justice, and reducing violence
  • Bilingual or multilingual proficiency.
  • Knowledge of local gun violence data, trends, and community resources.
  • This position may require occasional evening or weekend hours for events or workshops.
  • Travel within the community or region for outreach activities may be necessary.
  • Flexibility in work schedule based on program needs.

  6. f) Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. occasionally.
  7. g) Ability to travel throughout the Division
  8. h) Ability to be creative, original, intuitive, and perceptive.
  9. i) Ability to think logically and critically.
  10. j) Ability to envision a project from beginning to end.
  11. k) Ability to solve complex problems, make appropriate judgments and decisions
