Overview

To provide the Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) Department with an
individual to assist with supporting department operations in Allegheny County, along with nonmetro
areas of the Division. Primary responsibilities will include assisting the Operations Chief
with coordinating coverage for responses for emergency operations, and special events.
Additionally, the individual will be responsible for ensuring equipment and resources are
operational and in a state of readiness

This role requires the individual to reside within a reasonable distance of the EDS facility located at 820 Parish Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15220, and to be able to respond to emergencies and disasters within one hour of notification.

Responsibilities

 

  • Along with Emergency Disaster Services Operations Chief, serve as the on-call Duty Officer and Primary Responder. 
  • Including acknowledging requests for service, determining nature of the response/request, and initiating a response if necessary. 
  • Coordination of volunteers, resources, supplies, and equipment to support responses and special events. 
  • Ensure all response supplies are well stocked, discard any out-of-date items. 
  • Serve as the primary driver of the canteen, being able to load/unload, prepare food, work extended hours, clean the canteen, and repeatedly lift heavy objects. 
  • Potential to deploy nationally to large-scale disasters for up to 14-days” 

 

  • Readiness & Preparation: 
  • Ensure that response vehicles are well maintained both mechanically and cosmetically, and that they are ready to be deployed and operational including being fully stocked after each response/event.  
  • Report all mechanical issues to Emergency Disaster Services Assistant Director for maintenance scheduling. 
  • Ensure the walk-in refrigerator/freezer are clean, in order, and operational. 
  • Ensure cleanliness of fill room, including floors, walls, sinks, freezer, ice machine, and water dispenser.  
  • Maintain cleanliness and operational standard for all operation-based resources including but not limited to; Cambros, coolers, generators, misting fans, tents, etc. 

 

Additional Responsibilities: 

  • Special Duty Events: 
  • Assist with scheduling volunteers & arrangements for special duty events approved and assigned by EDS Command Staff. Provide on-ground support as needed.   
  • Volunteers: 
  • Provide direct supervision to volunteers assigned under granted areas of responsibility. Assist with recruitment, retention, and on-boarding of volunteers.  
  • Donations: 
  • Assist with the Emergency Disaster Services Department’s partnership with the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, and other donation avenues. May include assisting with donation pick-up or distribution as necessary.  
  • General Items: 
  • Provide the EDS Command Staff with general assistance through all program phases and development for local and Divisional Emergency Disaster Services program.  
  • Assist with maintaining EDS garage facility including, but not limited to cleaning, trash removal, etc.  
  • Participate in all meetings as assigned by Command Staff. 
  • Complete & maintain all logs and documentation required for areas of responsibility.  
  • Assist with planning, development, implantation, and accomplishment of department goals. 
  • Develop, maintain & achieve professional development goals.  
  • When necessary, undertake additional duties and tasks as assigned by supervisors, other relationships and responsibilities may be created for time periods deemed necessary upon emergency circumstances.  
  • In absence of Operations Chief, EDS Operations Support Staff will report to the EDS Assistant Director  
  • All scheduling matters should be handled with immediate supervisor. 

 

 

 


 

Qualifications

Valid Pennsylvania Driver’s License.
 Working knowledge of basic Canteen systems, functions, and maintenance.
 Experience with operating a forklift.
 Must be able to work with manual & power tools.
 Ability to work on a ladder.
 Ability to lift and carry up to 75lbs at least 4 feet off the ground to load vehicles
(No Exceptions)
 Basic working knowledge of computers, specifically Microsoft Office
Applications
 Ability to work with minimum supervision.
 Ability to supervise & manage other individuals.
 Wear appropriate EDS uniform & identification.
 PA Clearance required upon employment and thereafter upon renewal date: PA
Child Abuse History Clearance, Request for Criminal Record. And Fingerprint based
federal criminal history.
 PA Mandated and Permissive Reporting & The Salvation Army KeepSafe
training required.
Education & Experience:
 Associates degree Preferred.
 High School Diploma or Equivalent Required.
 Minimum of two years’ experience in related field of non-profit, emergencyArmy KeepSafe
training required.
