This is a non-exempt position reporting to the Assistant Controller – Trust Operations. The Trust Assistant Accountant is principally responsible for processing of Trust deposits (e.g., contributions, legacies and bequests, third party trust income, property sales, and intercompany transfers, etc.) and certain Trust estate advices throughout the Salvation Army (“SA”) Eastern Territory. This includes the preparation of necessary journal entries and initiation of funding and wire transfer requests. The Trust Accountant will be expected to work closely with Territorial staff and departments as well as with Command Finance representatives.

 

This position requires approximately 35 hours of work per week and is eligible for a hybrid work arrangement (3 days onsite/ 2 days remote) after three months of employment.

Responsibilities

Trust Processing

  • Prepare all Trust deposits for entry into the general ledger (“GL”). This includes, but is not limited to contributions, legacies and bequests, third party trust income, property sales, and intercompany transfers.
  • Separate Trust deposits into non-Legal and Legal batches and liaison with Development and Legal departments to ensure appropriate allocation of deposits.
  • Process estate advices pertaining to legacies and bequests, third party trust income, and planned giving terminations that are processed through the Legal department.
  • Follow up with Command Finance departments as needed to ensure proper supporting documentation is received on intercompany transfer deposits.
  • Follow up with other Salvation Army Territories including National Headquarters and Central, Southern and Western Territories regarding deposits received to ensure appropriate processing.
  • Review suspense/holding and NVT accounts and prepare payments to appropriate SA unit.
  • Provide monthly bank reconciliation reporting to Chesterfield. • Request to set up new Trust accounts when necessary.
  • Approve and post vendor invoices into the GL.
  • Process semi-weekly Trust ACH and check payment runs and post payments into the GL.
  • Serve as backup for posting journal entries in the GL.
  • Serve as backup for initiation of wire transfers in JPMorgan (JPMAccess Platform).

  • Assist with providing supporting documents related to audit.
  • Perform analysis or assist in special projects as requested.
  • Communicate with co-workers, management, and Commands in a courteous and professional manner.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree or equivalent 
  • 1-3 years of related experience
  • Familiarity with not-for-profit accounting is a plus
  • Must be able to multi-task and demonstrate agility to meet assigned deadlines
  • Detail oriented and organized in work • Self-motivated and able to function independently
  • Proficient skills in Microsoft Office Software (Excel, Word, etc.)
  • Excellent interpersonal communication, and problem-solving skills
