Overview

Location: Greater Hartford Area Services, Marshall House Overflow Shelter (Hartford, CT)

Status:  Non-exempt, Part-time, Temporary (Dec 2025-Mar 2026)

Hours Per Week: 24

 

Scope of Position: Provide daily supervision, monitoring, reporting, and technical support services to clients accessing no-freeze programs; maintain appropriate records in addition to ongoing written and verbal communication with the supervisor regarding daily client activities; and facilitate an emotional and physical environment conducive to enhancing positive client morale and stabilization.

Responsibilities

  • Alert the supervisor immediately of any concerns regarding parent/child interactions.
  • Assist in cleaning and maintenance of the facility.
  • Assist in preparing meals/food for shelter guests.
  • Assist with routine personal hygiene as needed (i.e., provide toiletries and instruction in their proper use).
  • Attend and participate in all mandatory staff meetings and trainings.
  • Authorize and complete requests for hotel stays.
  • Complete incident reports.
  • Complete intakes on households unable to be diverted/triaged to other shelters.
  • Complete the discharge procedure each day.
  • Conduct security checks in and around the premises to ensure everyone’s safety.
  • Contact area shelters to facilitate the transfer of clients from the No Freeze Program to a more stable shelter placement.
  • Ensure there is always a 1:25 staff-to-adult resident ratio. Staff must stay on duty until coverage arrives. During shift changes, brief staff on client issues or concerns.
  • In a medical emergency or if an accident occurs on the property, call 911.
  • Keep the staff area stocked with copies of all appropriate forms.
  • Maintain donations as instructed.
  • Perform all required shift tasks before the completion of each shift.
  • Provide a supportive and encouraging environment, along with one-on-one support to residents.
  • Provide coverage for the facility by monitoring the doors and answering the phone.
  • Provide crisis intervention and the necessary support and resources to residents when situations arise.
  • Report to all scheduled shifts on time and ready to perform duties. Plan for coverage if unable to report to work and follow the supervisor's call-out procedures.
  • Screen prospective residents for possible admission following Greater Hartford CAN’s cold weather protocol.
  • Store, provide, and make available the resident’s medication when necessary.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Ability to establish and set appropriate limits with people served to help them gain skills and confidence.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality in all aspects of the work environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other personnel, service providers, and professionals.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and work well under pressure.
  • Basic computer knowledge of Microsoft Office.
  • Capacity to maintain a role to empower clients and to intervene appropriately to meet service goals.
  • Commitment to empowering others to solve their problems.
  • Committed to working with the homeless population.
  • Conviction about the capacity of people to grow and change.
  • Experience working with at-risk populations or people experiencing homelessness preferred.
  • Fluency in the English language is required; Spanish-speaking ability is preferred.
  • Must be empathetic and caring.
  • Must have a minimum availability of three shifts weekly.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Sensitivity to cultural and socioeconomic characteristics of the population served.
  • Willing to work weekends, evenings (including overnights), and holidays is required.
  • Must complete KeepSAfe and other required training upon hire.
