Overview

Position Title: Kitchen Assistant
Classification:
Full-time/Non-Exempt

 

The Kitchen Assistant plays a vital role in supporting the food service team by assisting with routine food preparation and service tasks that contribute to the efficient operation of dining services for cadets, faculty, and staff. This position is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of the kitchen environment, including all utensils, equipment, and materials. The Kitchen Assistant ensures that all items are properly cleaned, stored, and in good working condition, thereby upholding health and safety standards and supporting the overall success of the food service program.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Under the direction of the First and Second Cook, assists in the preparation and production of scheduled menu items.
  • Supports the setup and maintenance of the refreshment station, including soda, juice, coffee, and tea.
  • Prepares and fills serving dishes and trays with cooked or prepped food items.
  • Assists in maintaining a fully stocked buffet line during meal service.
  • Prepares ingredients by washing, slicing, cutting, and peeling vegetables and fruits.
  • Assists with cooking and baking tasks as directed, including preparation of vegetables and other food items.
  • Sets up utensils, dishware, and trays in advance of scheduled mealtimes.
  • Participates in post-meal clean-up, including kitchen surfaces, food service lines, beverage stations, and equipment.
  • Prepares breakfast supplies and milk as scheduled.
  • Cleans the yogurt machine and beverage area as needed.
  • Assists in the preparation of side dishes for lunch and dinner service.
  • Cleans food preparation areas, stoves, grills, steam tables, and other cooking equipment.
  • Assists with unloading and organizing food and supply deliveries.
  • Adheres to all workplace health and safety regulations and maintains food hygiene standards as outlined by the Rockland County Department of Health.
  • Provides support to the dishwashing station when necessary.
  • Demonstrates a cooperative and enthusiastic attitude in support of the mission of the College for Officer Training.
  • Participates in assigned training sessions.
  • Performs other kitchen-related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications

MINIMUM EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED) and one year of related experience.

  • Demonstrates strong organizational abilities to manage tasks efficiently and maintain a structured work environment.
  • Exhibits keen attention to detail to ensure accuracy and consistency in all aspects of food preparation and service.
  • Capable of reading, interpreting, and following recipes, safety and sanitation protocols, and operating manuals for kitchen equipment with precision.
