Overview

Representing The Salvation Army’s spiritual & musical ministry in all spheres of influence within the Greater New York Division, this position will assist the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director in the development of the music and creative arts programs in the corps, and the overall Divisional music and creative arts ministry.

Responsibilities

  • Direct the Divisional Timbrel Group and Railton Timbrel Group, in preparation for participation at Divisional Events and cultivating continued growth of Timbrel performance in the Greater New York Division.
  • Oversee the development of Timbrel groups at the corps within the GNY Division, as assigned, assisting with the development of Drama and Music programs as appropriate.
  • Evaluate and document the strengths and weaknesses of the arts program in each corps assigned to determine the

aptitude of the participants, and as a result, develop a teaching plan to strengthen the skills of the participants within the corps to benefit the larger corps program

  • Assist the Music & Creative Arts Department in developing a teaching schedule based on the programming needs of the various corps within the Division
  • Coordinate the Arts Leadership Development efforts to build up local leaders/teachers of Timbrel and Drama programs, especially in Corps not regularly visited by a Music & Creative Arts Department member.
  • Coordinate the resourcing of corps within the Division with Creative Arts resources and materials such as costumes, props, supplies, and other necessary equipment that will help both employees and local arts leaders to carry out a program within the corps setting
  • Develop leaders within the Corps by teaching them how to lead and rehearse arts groups, organize an arts program, teach individual lessons and group classes, instruct participants of all ages, prepare for performances, and how to mentor those participating in their program
  • Help to secure local volunteers to teach and enhance the musical ministry and program of the Corps in the Division
  • Promote and plan arts events at the Corps level as appropriate. This includes helping local leaders plan programs, advertise these programs, and implement events.
  • Assist with Music & Creative Arts Camp, Junior & Senior Conservatories, Star Search, TAM Conservatory, and any Divisional events as assigned
  • Work diligently in all areas of the corps ministry to enhance both the artistic and spiritual growth of the participants within the music and arts programs 

Administrative Assistant Duties 

  • Assist with maintaining email lists for various groups with which the M&CA Department communicates
  • Assist with event registrations and corps officer/divisional approvals for events and groups
  • Assist in keeping office supplies stocked, organized, and stored in the office
  • Assist in keeping a full yearly calendar for events and a timeline for event logistics.
  • Assist in coordinating an alumni list for Divisional Groups
  • Assist with department finance details such as department travel reimbursements, corporate credit card receipts, invoices etc.
  • Assist with any other projects and responsibilities as assigned by the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director
  • All other duties as assigned 

Breakdown of time:

Corps instruction/teaching, leadership development and preparation – 40%

Administrative duties: 30%

Divisional group leadership & special events assistance – 15%

Star Lake Camp summer ministry – 15%

 

The Divisional Creative Arts Leader & Administrative Assistant will teach at 2-3 corps per week as assigned by the Divisional Music & Creative Arts Director, will work on Administrative Duties 1-2 days per week, and will soldier at a corps to be approved by the Program Secretary.

 

 

 

 

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a field related to the Arts and/or relevant experience leading Creative Arts programs in The Salvation Army with emphasis in Theater, Dance and/or Timbrels.
  • Active uniformed Salvationist in good standing, who is willing to soldier at a Corps in the Greater New York Division, to be approved by the GNY Program Secretary
  • Must have or obtain a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain access to a vehicle for travel around the Greater New York Division
  • Must have strong administrative skills and a good understanding of basic computer programs
  • Must be able to work well independently and have good organizational skills
  • Must be able to lift 25 lbs.
