FUNCTION:

The Development Manager organizes and coordinates philanthropic activity for The Salvation Army Central Kentucky Area Services. This position requires collaboration and cooperation with DHQ and THQ on various territory-wide initiatives and then localizing these to the Central Kentucky area to raise funds. This includes oversight of annual giving and giving societies, securing grant funding needed for the annual operating budget, special event fundraising and Advisory Board relations. The Development Manager leads, supervises and manages the CKAS Development Department; it includes managing departmental staff, meeting financial and material needs, increasing volunteer engagement and support, overseeing fund-raising events, cultivation and management of other local donor and corporate relationships. This position collaborates and works with Divisional and Territorial staff regarding assigned mid-level, major, planned giving, and corporation/foundation donors.  The Development Manager will raise awareness of The Salvation Army’s Mission, goals and financial needs in the community and oversee all aspects of public relations including media relations, social media presence, contact marketing systems and marketing materials. 

Responsibilities

DUTIES:

1   Assign, supervise and review activities of department staff.

2   Seek, qualify, draft and develop materials to submit for granting or other funding opportunities.

3   Identify and build relationships with potential donors, foundations, and corporations.

4   Engage existing donors and enhance relationships.

5   Develop fundraising plans that maximize participation and contributions.

6   Secure commitments of participation or sponsorship from individuals or corporate donors.

7   Write and send letters of thanks to donors from the Area Coordinators.

8   Solicit cash or in-kind donations or sponsorships from individuals, business, or public funding opportunities.

9   Establish and maintain effective working relationships with media representatives, donors, key community leaders and leverage these relationships and connections to develop and enhance fundraising opportunities.

10  Establish goals for soliciting funds, develop and maintain policies for the collections and safeguarding of donations and donor information.

11  Ensure The Salvation Army Mission, programs and service needs are aligned with funding proposals

12  Outreach, speaking and cultivation of in-kind donations that benefit the organization and lead to financial support.

13  Major Gifts Solicitation: Work with Divisional Staff to develop systematic promotion, cultivation and solicitation of individuals, corporations, and foundations within the defined program and service area.

14  Corporate Solicitation: Systematic promotion, cultivation, and solicitation of all corporations within the geographic area served by the office(s) for which she/he is employed and work with DHQ or THQ as needed.

15  Foundation and Grant Solicitation:  Develop, consistent with Salvation Army policy, proposals for local and area foundations, relating to program development, enhancement, and continuity. Responsibility shall include compliance with terms of grant/contribution and such reporting as may be required.

16  Planned Giving: Promote the planned giving program of The Salvation Army, engage in the identification of prospects, and refer viable prospects to the Divisional Planned Giving Director to cooperatively devise and execute Agreements. 

17  Special Fund-Raising Events / Volunteer Groups: Oversee staff and volunteers for Annual Civic Event and other key fundraising events, volunteer groups, seasonal volunteers and ongoing volunteer engagement and cultivation.

18  The Development Manager shall refrain from any activity which may be construed as, or lead to, a conflict of interest, i.e., sale of securities, real estate, insurance, etc., where such training, licensure and experience may have been acquired from previous employment, he/she shall, under no circumstances, use Salvation Army contacts or resources or represent The Salvation Army for personal gain

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

1  Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience with proven record of success

2  3 years or experience in related field

3  Knowledge of grant application, previous fund-raising success.

4  Proficient in Microsoft applications

5  Exceptional written and oral communication

6  Must be sensitive to the issues of families, children, cultural diversity, and homelessness. Must be able to assist people and aid in a calm, courteous manner.
