Location: Reading Corps - Admin

Availability of Position: 9/8/25 

Schedule:  Part-Time; M-F, 12:30pm-4:30pm

Reporting Relationship: Maintenance Manager; Corps Commanding Officer 

Salary and Grade:  $12.00 per hour; 70 Non-Exempt

Responsibilities

Position Overview: The Salvation Army in Reading, Pennsylvania, is looking for a Janitor. The Janitor ensures a clean, safe, and welcoming environment by performing routine cleaning tasks, restocking supplies, removing trash, and reporting maintenance issues. Responsibilities include sweeping, mopping, disinfecting, and supporting event setups. Reliability, attention to detail, and adherence to safety protocols are essential for maintaining the facility’s overall appearance and hygiene.

 

Duties:      

  • Follow instructions outlined in weekly checklists or logs provided by the supervisor or Corps Officer.
  • Clean, sanitize, and restock restrooms throughout the facility.
  • Sweep, mop, scrub, and vacuum all floors to maintain a clean and safe environment.
  • Collect and dispose of trash and recycling from all areas of the building.
  • Use cleaning chemicals and power equipment according to safety guidelines to prevent damage to surfaces and fixtures.
  • Monitor the overall condition of the facility and report routine or non-routine maintenance needs to the supervisor or Corps Officer.
  • Prepare the Chapel for worship services and special observances (e.g., Easter, Christmas, weddings, funerals) by vacuuming, organizing chairs, dusting, and setting up as needed.
  • Set up meeting rooms and event spaces according to the supervisor's or Corps Officer's instructions.
  • Maintain floors and floor coverings following industry standards and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Ensure all interior surfaces—including floors, walls, windows, baseboards, and restrooms—are kept clean and sanitary.
  • Follow all established safety protocols for the handling of chemicals and equipment.
  • Empty, clean, and maintain all trash and recycling containers throughout the facility.
  • Organize, stock, and inventory cleaning and maintenance supplies; submit purchase requests as needed.
  • Promptly report all maintenance, safety, and property concerns to the supervisor or Corps Officer.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Requirements:             

  • Two years of experience in the field
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skill in cleaning and general maintenance
  • High School diploma or GED
  • Demonstrate satisfactory written and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrate an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships, both internal and external to The Salvation Army
  • Must be adaptable and flexible to a changing work environment and job requirements
  • Must demonstrate a sense of urgency when accomplishing tasks of a time-sensitive nature/working to deadlines
  • Must be ambitious, self-motivated, and conscientious, demonstrating a strong work ethic
  • As a Mandated Reporter, must provide proof of having completed training on recognizing and reporting child abuse meeting the training standards of PA Act 153 of 2014 within 30 days of employment with recurrent training required every five years thereafter.
  • Meets the Child Protection Clearances required by PA Act 153 to include PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check, and FBI Criminal Record Check.
  • Must possess an understanding of and support the mission of The Salvation Army.
