Overview

Position:  Service Extension Director

Department:   Community Relations and Development - Service Extension

Availability of Position:  Immediate

Schedule:  FT, 40+ hours, Monday-Friday, evenings/weekends, as needed to meet responsibilities.

Reporting Relationship: Director of Advancement

Salary and Grade:   $100,000-$110,000, 17 Exempt

Position Overview:

              

The Service Extension Director (SED) is responsible for providing leadership to and coordinating  the activies of The Salvation Army’s Service Extension Department within the Eastern Pennsylvania and Delaware Division, as well as manage and maintain an assigned service area. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following: program development, expansion and improvement of programs; involvement with budget planning and implementation; personnel management; the recruitment and training of volunteers; manage and support staff; program evaluation; implementation of appropriate program policies; and support and encourage divisional leadership’s vision for the department by effectively communicating leaderhip’s priorities, agendas, and directives in a positive manner.

Responsibilities

              

  • Ensure compliance to Salvation Army policies and procedures by all staff and all service unit volunteers, ensuring all are properly and adequately trained.
  • Develop and implement a plan to ensure the strategic recruitment and training of volunteers, ensuring the Mission is furthered through the work of volunteers.
  • Manage and maintain assigned service areas.
  • Support and encourage divisional leadership’s vision for the department by effectively communicating their priorities, agendas, and directives in a positive manner.
  • Responsible for the preparation of the department’s annual budget and administering affairs of the department within the approved budget, as well as revising the budget and seeking approval for non-budgeted expenditures, as needed, throughout the year.
  • Create, present, obtain approval for, and establish long-range objectives and to specify the strategies and actions needed to achieve them.
  • Operate within the policies established by The Salvation Army about finances, human resources, fundraising, volunteer, and asset management.
  • Supervise the preparation of United Way budgets in the approriate counties and, when possible, present for United Way hearings, maintaining and enhancing United Way relationships and ensuring The Salvation Army is meeting the guidelines of both organizations as outlined in the Principles of Cooperation.
  • Monitor EFSP / ARPA-R funds and reports, ensuring the federal guidelines for recording and use of those funds are met.
  • Monitor funds to ensure their use is keeping with the donor’s intent, working with Finance and other Community Relations and Development (CRD) staff members to ensure stewardship and use of funds comply with grant agreement or donor restriction.
  • Communicate with key community stakeholders, representing the organization to customers, the public, government, and other external sources.
  • Collaborate with other CRD staff members for all fundraising efforts as they relate to Service Unit communities, seeking to strengthen the donor base and to design a strategy to maximize resources by increasing annual income and/or decreasing the cost of raising said funds, as well as assist in compiling stewardship information for donor updates.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Divisional Corporate, Foundation, and Partnership/Government Relations staff in CRD to identify potential engagement opportunities, encouraging field representatives to keep an open dialogue for the review and submission of grant applications.
  • In conjunction with other CRD staff members, review all direct mail and marketing appeals prior to their release.
  • Seek to enhance the fundraising effort and maximize net receipts in all service unit areas.
  • Support the Divisional Comprehensive Campaign and future initiatives, working directly with all CRD staff members CRD staff and campaign counsel to effectively implement initiatives in Service Extension areas.
  • Seek to ensure that the local service units are effectively responding to the social service needs of their community and that adequate funds, training and support are given to accomplish this goal.
  • Supervise all Service Unit programs including: (a) Camping Program, (b) Seasonal Community Cares / League of Mercy; and (c) Christmas, and other seasonal programs.
  • Ensure updated records are kept in a database of all service unit committee members, ensuring they are communicated with regularly through the mail, telephone, email, and visits by field representatives and, when warranted, personally.
  • Ensure every active committee member and each volunteer is regularly being recognized and trained via their assigned Regional Manager and the SED.
  • Support Regional Managers as they organize the Service Units to provide maximum service and to meet the mission of The Salvation Army, reactivating units, recruiting new volunteers to serve on the unit committee, and combining units where this cannot be accomplished.
  • Maintain communications with the corps officers of the division, encouraging field representatives and unit chairpersons to keep an open dialogue with the corps officers in their area.
  • Ensure corps officers are aware of the purpose and work of the local service units, seeking their cooperation and support and, when possible, encourage and facilitate collaboration between the corps and service units.
  • Monitor all service unit field reports and oversee the preparation of service extension reports for internal and external use, ensuring accurate preparation of annual or special reports, as needed.
  • Ensure that all donations at the Service Unit level are entered into the Divisional CRM (SalesForce) with interaction notes when applicable.
  • Perform related duties, assigned.

Qualifications

    • College Degree in Social Work, Business, Management, or related field, advanced degree strongly
    • Proven track record of at least ten to fifteen years of successful management experience in a complex setting to include: budgets, human resources management, fundraising and administration.
    • Clear and effective communications skills
    • Able to make sound decisions in urgent situations which reflect excellent problem-solving skills and good judgment.
    • Must be able to develop constructive and cooperative working relationships with others, and to maintain those relationships over time.
    • Analytical and deductive reasoning skills needed for reasonable and cost effective problem-solving and decision making.
    • Must be able to make effective presentations and speeches to audiences of various sizes on in a variety of settings.
    • Must be willing to establish and maintain dedicated office hours.
    • Must have knowledge of the principles and processes for providing customer service, to include: Needs assessment, meeting of quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
    • Must have knowledge of principles and methods for effective fundraising.
    • Must have knowledge of the principles and methods for volunteer management.
    • Must have excellent knowledge of computers, and MS Office suite.
    • Must have excellent organizational skills.
    • Child Protection Clearances PA Act 153 requires that all prospective employees complete the following clearance and background checks prior to employment: PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record/Fingerprint Check. Meets the Child Protection Clearances required by PA Act 153 to include PA Child Abuse History Clearance, PA State Police Criminal Record Check and FBI Criminal Record Check along with renewals every five years.
